What should an Amazon advertising strategy include?
A complete strategy covers five things: goals per product (launch, growth, profit or defense), the ad types that serve each goal, a target ACoS or return set from margin, a budget plan across the year, and the metrics you will judge it on. Without the first and third, ad spend drifts toward whatever the console recommends. Our Amazon marketing strategy guide covers the non-ad side, such as pricing, promotions and external traffic.
The Amazon ad types and the job each one does
Think of ad types as layers, not alternatives. Search ads capture demand that already exists; display and video create and recapture it. Add layers in this order as data and budget grow. For a detailed comparison of the top layers, see Amazon DSP vs sponsored ads.
- Sponsored Products: single-product search and product page ads, cost per click, the base of every strategy
- Sponsored Brands: logo, headline, product collection or video at the top of search, Brand Registry required for sellers
- Display ads, formerly Sponsored Display: remarketing and audience ads on and off Amazon
- Display, video and audio (DVA+): programmatic display, streaming TV and audio on one budget
- Full-Funnel Campaigns: AI-managed mix across video, display and audio toward one goal
Sponsored Products, Brands and Display managed daily to profit-capped targets. Flat monthly plans, no percentage of spend, every bid change explained.
How Amazon Ads Agent changes your strategy
On September 29, 2026, at unBoxed, Amazon introduced Amazon Ads Agent as the name for its unified buying platform. It brings three campaign types into one place: sponsored ads, Full-Funnel Campaigns, and display, video and audio. Amazon said Full-Funnel Campaigns are available to all US advertisers, DVA+ would begin rolling out in late October, and conversational tools, including AI targeting, natural language analytics and AI guidance for Sponsored Products bids, budgets and targeting, would roll out over the coming months.
The strategic point: more decisions can be handed to Amazon's AI, and some of its suggestions can be applied in one click. That makes your own guardrails more important. Decide target ACoS and budgets per product first, then judge each AI recommendation against them. Our Amazon Ads Agent and unBoxed 2026 roundup covers the announcements.
Funnel stages: match ad type to goal
Each product sits at a different stage, and each stage needs a different mix. A new product needs search ads on the terms it should rank for. A proven product can add Sponsored Brands and remarketing. A category leader can afford upper-funnel video to build demand that search ads later capture. Amazon's targeting guide also names campaign goals you can reuse: Expand, Promote, Protect, Conquest, Upsell and Cross-sell.
10 Amazon advertising tips for better results
These are the habits that separate efficient accounts from expensive ones. Each links to a deeper guide where you need more.
- Set target ACoS per product from margin after fees, not one account-wide number
- Fix listings before scaling ads: images, reviews, price and stock
- Run automatic campaigns for discovery and move winners to exact match
- Give each campaign one goal so the data stays readable
- Add negatives weekly for terms with 20 or more clicks and no sales
- Protect branded terms so competitors cannot take your shoppers
- Test placement adjustments from the placement report, not guesses
- Pause ads before a stockout instead of after it
- Add Sponsored Brands video once you have proven keywords
- Judge the whole program on TACoS and total sales, not ACoS alone
How to plan Amazon advertising around the calendar
Shopping events raise traffic, conversion and click prices together. Plan budgets and stock for them months ahead. In 2026, Prime Day ran June 23 to 26 and Prime Big Deal Days ran October 6 and 7. Black Friday is November 27 and Cyber Monday November 30. Raise budgets in the days before an event, when shoppers research and add to carts, keep them up through the event, and run remarketing to event browsers afterward. Amazon's schedule-based budget rules can lift budgets automatically for an event. See our guides to Prime Day seller prep, the Amazon Q4 strategy and Amazon Black Friday 2026.
- Lead-in: raise budgets and bids on core terms
- Event days: watch budgets hourly so top campaigns do not run out
- After: remarket to viewers and keep brand terms covered
- Off-season: test new keywords and creative at lower CPC

How to measure an Amazon advertising strategy
Use the right metric for each layer. Search ads are judged on ACoS and ROAS against target. Brand and upper-funnel campaigns are judged on new-to-brand customers, branded search growth and total sales. Across the program, TACoS, ad spend divided by total sales, shows whether ads are building organic demand. Amazon Marketing Cloud can show how display and video exposure changes search results. Our guide to Amazon advertising metrics defines each one, and Amazon Marketing Cloud explains the clean room.
Building the strategy, step by step
Use this order for a new account or a reset of an old one.
- Calculate break-even and target ACoS for every product
- Assign each product a goal: launch, growth, profit or defense
- Build Sponsored Products: auto, broad and phrase, exact, branded
- Add Sponsored Brands and remarketing once search is profitable
- Map budgets to the retail calendar for the next 12 months
- Test DVA+ or Full-Funnel Campaigns with a measured budget
- Review weekly, and reset targets when price or fees change
