What is Amazon advertising?

Amazon Ads is Amazon's advertising business. For sellers and vendors it is mostly about sponsored ads: auction-based, cost-per-click placements in search results and on product pages. Above those sit programmatic display, streaming TV and audio campaigns that reach shoppers on Prime Video, Twitch, Fire TV and thousands of third-party sites and apps.

The reason Amazon advertising matters is simple. Shoppers on Amazon are already searching for a product, so ads reach people close to buying. Ad sales also feed organic rank, because every sale helps the listing look relevant for that search. If you are new to the mechanics, our guide to Amazon Sponsored Products covers the core ad type in depth.

Amazon ad types compared

Each ad type has a job. Think of them as layers in a funnel rather than alternatives, and add them in order as your data and budget grow.

  • Sponsored Products: single-product ads in search results and on product pages, cost per click, no minimum spend
  • Sponsored Brands: logo, headline and several products or a video at the top of search, for Brand Registry sellers and vendors
  • Sponsored Display: display ads on and off Amazon that retarget viewers and target audiences or products
  • Sponsored TV: streaming TV ads that brands can buy without a programmatic setup
  • Display, video and audio (DSP, now DVA+): programmatic campaigns priced by impressions, on and off Amazon
  • Amazon Attribution and Amazon Marketing Cloud: free measurement tools for eligible advertisers

Amazon Ads Agent: what changed in 2026

At unBoxed 2026 in late September, Amazon introduced Amazon Ads Agent as the new name for its unified buying platform, which combines what used to be the advertising console and Amazon DSP. Amazon says sponsored ads, Full-Funnel Campaigns and display, video and audio campaigns now sit in one place.

Full-Funnel Campaigns were announced as available to all US advertisers, DVA+ was scheduled to begin rolling out in late October, and conversational features such as AI targeting, natural language analytics and AI guidance for Sponsored Products roll out over the coming months. Our roundup of new Amazon features for sellers in 2026 tracks what has reached sellers so far.

How much does Amazon advertising cost?

Sponsored ads have no monthly or upfront fee. You set a daily budget and a maximum bid per click, and you pay only when a shopper clicks. Amazon's FAQ lists a minimum daily budget of $1.00 for Sponsored Products, and its best practice guide suggests starting around $10 a day. Daily budgets are not paced through the day, so a small budget can run out by lunchtime.

Click prices are set by auction and vary widely by category. One 2026 benchmark of 69 managed accounts found a median US cost per click of $0.82, with a typical range of $0.51 to $1.22. Programmatic campaigns are bought on impressions instead, so they are judged on reach and new-to-brand customers as much as on direct sales.

Who can advertise on Amazon?

Professional sellers, vendors, KDP authors and agencies can run Sponsored Products. Products must be in an eligible category, in stock and winning the featured offer, because ads only show while the listing can be bought. Sponsored Brands require Amazon Brand Registry for sellers. Programmatic display, video and audio is available to all advertisers through DVA+, including brands that do not sell on Amazon.

How to start Amazon advertising, step by step

A clean start saves months of wasted spend. This is the order that works for most new brands.

  • Fix the listing first: title, images, bullets and reviews decide conversion
  • Work out break-even ACoS for each product from margin after fees
  • Launch a Sponsored Products automatic campaign to collect search terms
  • After about two weeks, build manual campaigns with your best converting terms
  • Add negative keywords for irrelevant or wasteful searches
  • Add Sponsored Brands once you are brand registered and have proven keywords
  • Layer in Sponsored Display and video retargeting when sales are stable

Which metrics should you track?

Amazon reports clicks, spend, sales, ACoS and ROAS for every campaign. ACoS is ad spend divided by ad sales. The number that matters more for the business is TACoS, ad spend divided by total sales, because it shows whether ads are building organic sales or just renting them. Our Amazon advertising metrics guide explains each one and what a good ACoS for Amazon looks like for your margin.

Common Amazon advertising mistakes

Most wasted spend comes from a handful of repeat mistakes. Check your account against this list before raising budgets.

  • Advertising products with weak listings or few reviews
  • One ACoS target for every product regardless of margin
  • Never reading the search term report
  • Letting ads run while stock is about to run out
  • Mixing products with different prices in one ad group
  • Judging success on ACoS alone instead of total sales and profit

When to bring in help

Amazon advertising rewards daily attention, and the platform now changes faster than most in-house teams can follow. PPC Spider runs Amazon PPC management on SpiderOS, our AI platform that monitors bids, budgets, search terms and stock and sets every target ACoS from product margin after fees. PPC plans start at $995 a month. If you want an outside view first, request a free Amazon audit and we will show where spend is leaking.
