Choose your Amazon business model
The model you pick decides how much capital you need, how much control you have and how defensible the business is. Most long term Amazon businesses are brands, but each model has a place.
- Private label: your own brand, made by a manufacturer; most control and most upfront cost
- Wholesale: buy established brands in bulk and resell; lower risk, thinner margins
- Retail or online arbitrage: buy discounted products and resell; quick to start, hard to scale
- Handmade: sell products you make through Amazon Handmade
- Dropshipping: allowed only under strict rules, covered in how to dropship on Amazon
Research products before you spend money
Good Amazon products have steady demand, room for a better offer and enough margin after every fee. Look at search volume for the core keywords, how many established competitors have thousands of reviews, the price range shoppers accept, and the common complaints in competitor reviews that you could fix.
Run the numbers before ordering inventory. Price minus cost of goods, shipping to Amazon, referral fee, FBA fees and a realistic advertising cost per unit should leave a healthy profit. Our guide to Amazon product research covers the process in detail.
Advertising, listings, operations and finance handled together, with profit-capped targets and a dashboard you can log into. Plans published, no percentage of spend.
Open your Amazon seller account
Amazon offers two selling plans. The Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold and suits testing a few products. The Professional plan costs $39.99 a month and is needed for most growth tools, including advertising and Brand Registry benefits. You can switch plans later. See our step by step guide on how to open an Amazon seller account.
Registration usually asks for a government ID, a bank account, a chargeable credit card, tax information and a phone number, and Amazon verifies your identity before you can sell. Use details that match exactly across documents to avoid delays.
Individual vs Professional plan
| Individual | Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $0.99 per item sold | $39.99 per month |
| Best for | Testing a few items | Growing a business |

Budget for Amazon fees and startup costs
Fees vary by category and size, so check them for your exact product. Referral fees are a percentage of the sale price, with most categories at 8% to 15% and a $0.30 minimum in most categories. Media items also carry a $1.80 closing fee. If you use Fulfillment by Amazon, you pay fulfillment and storage fees, explained in our Amazon FBA fees guide.
- Selling plan: $39.99 a month for Professional
- Referral fee: mostly 8% to 15% of the sale price
- FBA fulfillment and storage fees if you use FBA
- Inventory, packaging and freight
- Product photos, A+ Content and listing design
- Launch advertising budget
- Trademark filing for Brand Registry
Use Amazon's new seller incentives
Amazon advertises more than $50,000 in potential credits and incentives for new sellers. For new brands, Brand Registry includes 10% back on the first $50,000 in branded sales, then 5% back through the first year until $1,000,000, plus a $200 credit for Amazon Vine reviews. These incentives have conditions and timelines, so check eligibility in Seller Central before you launch.
Register a trademark early. A pending application is enough to enroll in Brand Registry, which unlocks A+ Content, Stores, Sponsored Brands, Brand Analytics and protection tools.
How to start an Amazon business, step by step
Here is the full path from idea to first sales, in the order that saves the most money and time.
- Choose a model and a product category you understand
- Validate demand, competition and margin after all fees
- File a trademark and open a Professional seller account
- Order samples, then a first production run sized for 60 to 90 days of sales
- Create the listing with a compliant title, strong images and A+ Content
- Enroll in Brand Registry and Vine, then ship inventory to FBA or set up your own fulfillment
- Launch with Sponsored Products and track profit per unit weekly
Your first 90 days on Amazon
The first three months decide whether a product gains traction. Focus on getting early reviews through Vine, finding the search terms that convert through automatic and broad campaigns, and never running out of stock. Titles are now limited to 75 characters, so get them right at launch, and build an Amazon Store once your brand is registered.
Track profit, not revenue. A launch that sells well but loses money on every unit after ads is a warning, not a win. Read more in our guide to how does selling on Amazon work and our honest take on whether selling on Amazon is worth it.
Common mistakes new Amazon sellers make
Most failed launches share the same few causes. Avoid them and you are ahead of many new sellers.
- Choosing a product on revenue alone without checking fees and ad costs
- Ordering too much inventory before demand is proven
- Skipping the trademark and Brand Registry
- Weak photos and copied listing text
- Running ads without a target ACoS based on margin
- Running out of stock in the first months
