Featured Offer share and margin
What is dynamic pricing on Amazon?
Prices on Amazon move often. Competing sellers change their offers, Amazon's retail team adjusts its own prices, and demand shifts with seasons and events. Dynamic pricing means your price follows rules that react to those changes, instead of you editing prices by hand.
For resellers who share a listing, the main goal is usually the Featured Offer, the offer shown in the buy box. For brands that are the only seller, the goal is more often balancing sales speed with margin and keeping prices consistent with other channels.
How the Featured Offer and price interact
Price matters for the Featured Offer, but it is not the only factor. Amazon says lowering your price can help you become the Featured Offer but does not guarantee it, because performance factors such as inventory availability, fulfillment and customer service also count. A seller with fast Prime delivery and strong metrics can win at a slightly higher price than a slower competitor.
That is why racing to the lowest price is rarely the best strategy. Fix delivery speed and account metrics first, then price.
Advertising, listings, operations and finance handled together, with profit-capped targets and a dashboard you can log into. Plans published, no percentage of spend.
Common Amazon dynamic pricing strategies
Most pricing rules fall into a few families. Pick one per SKU, based on how much competition it has and how fast it sells.
- Match or beat the Featured Offer within a floor
- Price against the lowest offer for price sensitive shoppers
- Price against external retailers to stay competitive
- Raise price when stock is low and lower it when stock is high
- Adjust price to hit a target sales pace
- Hold a premium price when you are the only seller
Types of Amazon repricers
Amazon's free Automate Pricing tool, on the Professional plan, covers the main rule types: Competitive Featured Offer, Competitive Lowest Price, Competitive External Price, a sales based rule and business price rules. Amazon says changes usually apply in under 15 minutes for existing rules and do not count toward the daily price update allotment.
Third party repricers in the Selling Partner Appstore add more options, such as algorithmic pricing that models competitor behavior, pricing by time of day, or rules that combine stock, sales and margin. They cost extra, so compare their gain with the free tool first. Our guide to Amazon automate pricing walks through the free tool.
Repricer options
| Automate Pricing | Rule based app | Algorithmic app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, Professional plan | Monthly fee | Higher monthly fee |
| Rule types | Competitive, sales, B2B | Custom rules | Model driven |
| Best for | Most sellers | Many SKUs | Heavy competition |
The 2026 reference price rules
Strike through prices now need evidence. Trade press reports that from April 23, 2026, a seller submitted list price is only shown if customers bought the product at that price as the Featured Offer on Amazon, or another retailer recently offered it at that price. From May 18, 2026, the calculation of the typical price changed so long running promotional prices count once they run for more than half of any 90 day period.
For dynamic pricing this means constant discounting can remove your strike through, which can lower conversion. Keep regular full price periods if you rely on a visible discount.
Stay inside the Fair Pricing Policy
Amazon's Marketplace Fair Pricing Policy lists practices that harm customer trust, including a misleading reference price, a price significantly higher than recent prices offered on or off Amazon, selling multiple units for more per unit than a single unit, and excessive shipping fees. Amazon can remove the buy box, remove the offer, suspend the ship option, or in serious or repeated cases suspend selling privileges.
A repricer without a ceiling can break this policy during a stock shortage. Our guide to the Amazon fair pricing policy explains how to avoid it.
Guardrails every pricing rule needs
Automation makes mistakes faster than people do. Build these limits into every rule before you switch it on.
- A minimum price from landed cost, fees and target margin
- A maximum price to stay within Fair Pricing limits
- Separate rules for FBA and FBM offers
- A check on ad bids when price drops, since ACoS rises
- Price parity with your own website and other channels
- A weekly review of price history and Featured Offer percentage
Pricing guardrails
- Floor from cost and margin
- Ceiling for Fair Pricing
- Separate FBA and FBM rules
- Bid check when price drops
- Channel price parity
- Weekly price history review
Dynamic pricing and advertising
Price changes affect ads directly. A lower price usually raises conversion and lowers margin, so the break-even ACoS falls too. If your repricer cuts prices for a weekend while bids stay the same, you can lose money on every ad click that converts. Link pricing rules and bid rules, or at least review them together. Our Amazon selling strategy guide covers how to align the two.
PPC Spider is an Amazon and marketplace agency. SpiderOS, our AI platform, monitors bids, budgets, search terms and stock, and every target ACoS is set from margin after fees, so price changes and ad spend stay aligned. Our Amazon account management service covers pricing, ads and inventory, with PPC plans from $995 a month and full service from $1,950. Start with a free Amazon audit.
