What is Amazon private label?

Private label is a business model, not an Amazon program. You find a manufacturer, often one that already makes a similar product, agree changes to the design, materials or packaging, and have it produced with your brand on it. You then create a new ASIN and become the brand owner on Amazon.

It sits between two other models. Wholesale and arbitrage sellers resell other companies' brands on existing listings. Fully custom brands design products from scratch. Private label borrows a proven product type and wins on brand, quality fixes and marketing.

Private label vs wholesale vs reselling

Private label gives you ownership of the listing, pricing control and brand equity you can sell one day. Wholesale gives you proven demand and faster cash flow, but you share listings and margins with other sellers. Reselling and arbitrage need the least capital but offer the least control. Our guides to Amazon wholesale and Amazon reselling cover those models in depth.

Is Amazon private label still profitable in 2026?

It can be, but the easy wins are gone. Many categories are crowded with near-identical products, so profit now depends on a real reason to choose your product and on accurate unit economics. Amazon's referral fee is 15% in many common categories, FBA fees rose by about $0.08 per unit on average from January 15, 2026, and advertising is needed to launch. Model all of it before you order.

  • Landed cost per unit, including freight and duties
  • Referral fee for your category
  • FBA fulfillment and storage fees
  • Launch advertising and promotions
  • Returns and unsellable units

How to start an Amazon private label brand, step by step

Most failed launches skip a step, usually research or margin modeling. Follow the order below.

  • Research demand and competition for a niche, not a single keyword
  • Find two or three manufacturers and order samples
  • Improve something buyers complain about in competitor reviews
  • File a trademark for your brand name
  • Get GTINs from GS1 and design compliant packaging
  • Place a first order sized for 60 to 90 days of expected sales
  • Build the listing with strong images, copy and A+ Content
  • Launch with Sponsored Products, a coupon and review programs

Finding and vetting a manufacturer

Ask each supplier for samples, minimum order quantities, unit price at several volumes, lead time and the certifications your category requires. Inspect samples against competitor products, and arrange a pre-shipment inspection for the production run. Clear written specifications, including packaging and labeling, prevent most quality disputes.

Before your first order

  • Samples tested against competitors
  • Landed cost per unit confirmed
  • Margin after referral and FBA fees
  • Trademark application filed
  • GTINs licensed from GS1
  • Category approval checked

Brand Registry and trademarks

Brand Registry is free and unlocks the tools private label sellers rely on: A+ Content, Brand Stores, Sponsored Brands, Brand Analytics, Vine and brand protection tools. Amazon requires a pending or registered trademark from a government office in a country with an Amazon store, and the brand name must appear permanently on the product or packaging.

Amazon says pending applications qualify in some cases, so check eligibility in your account. If you have no trademark yet, Amazon's IP Accelerator connects you with vetted law firms. Read our guides to Amazon Brand Registry and trademarks for Brand Registry.

New seller incentives for brands

Amazon currently advertises incentives for new brands that enroll in Brand Registry, including 10% back on the first $50,000 in branded sales, then 5% back through the first year up to $1,000,000, plus a Vine credit. Terms change, so confirm the current offer and eligibility window in Seller Central when you register.

Launching a private label product

A new ASIN has no sales history, no reviews and no organic rank. Launch plans combine a complete listing, Sponsored Products on exact and phrase match keywords, a modest coupon, and Amazon Vine for early reviews. Watch conversion rate and search term data weekly and cut waste fast. Our product launch guide walks through the first 90 days.

Common private label mistakes

  • Choosing a product only because it sells well for others
  • Ordering too much inventory before testing
  • Ignoring certifications and restricted category rules
  • Launching without a trademark or Brand Registry plan
  • Setting an ACoS target without knowing true margin

How PPC Spider helps

PPC Spider's Amazon product launch service plans keyword targets, listing content and launch ads for new private label ASINs. SpiderOS monitors bids, budgets, search terms and stock daily, and target ACoS is set from your product margin after fees. A free Amazon audit is the quickest way to check whether your numbers work.
