How does selling on Amazon work, in five stages?
Every sale on Amazon follows the same cycle, whether you sell one product or a thousand. Understanding it helps you see where money is made and lost.
- Account: register as a seller on the Individual or Professional plan
- Listing: create a product page or add your offer to an existing one
- Discovery: shoppers find the product through search, ads, deals and recommendations
- Fulfillment: Amazon ships it (FBA) or you ship it (FBM)
- Payout: Amazon deducts fees and pays the balance to your bank
Seller accounts and selling plans
Amazon's Individual plan costs $0.99 per item sold, and the Professional plan costs $39.99 a month plus selling fees. Most businesses choose Professional because it unlocks advertising and other growth tools. Registration requires identity verification, a bank account and tax information. Our guide to how to start an Amazon business covers setup in detail.
Selling partners account for more than 60% of sales in Amazon's store, according to Amazon, so you are joining a marketplace where independent businesses are the majority of the offer.
Advertising, listings, operations and finance handled together, with profit-capped targets and a dashboard you can log into. Plans published, no percentage of spend.
How listings, ASINs and the Buy Box work
Each product on Amazon has one detail page and one ASIN, shared by every seller of that exact product. If you sell your own brand, you create the listing. If you resell an existing product, you add your offer to its page. Our guide to what is an ASIN explains identifiers.
When several sellers offer the same product, Amazon features one offer in the Buy Box, the Add to Cart button. Price, delivery speed, stock and seller performance all influence which offer wins. Brand owners selling their own product usually hold the Buy Box unless resellers undercut them.
How shoppers find products on Amazon
Most sales start with a search. Amazon ranks results using relevance and performance signals such as sales, conversion and availability. Titles are now limited to 75 characters, enforced from July 27, 2026, with a separate Item Highlights field for extra detail. Shoppers also find products through sponsored ads, deals, badges such as Amazon's Choice, image search and Alexa for Shopping, the assistant Amazon renamed from Rufus on May 13, 2026.
FBA vs FBM: who ships the order?
With Fulfillment by Amazon, you send inventory to Amazon's warehouses and Amazon picks, packs, ships, handles customer service and processes returns, for per unit fulfillment fees and monthly storage fees. Products become eligible for Prime. With fulfillment by merchant, you store and ship orders yourself and keep control of packaging and costs. See our full FBA vs FBM comparison.
Some sellers use suppliers to ship directly to customers. That is allowed only under Amazon's drop shipping policy, explained in how to dropship on Amazon.

What fees does Amazon charge sellers?
Amazon's fees fall into a few groups. Referral fees are a percentage of the sale price, mostly 8% to 15% depending on category, with a $0.30 minimum in most categories. Media items add a $1.80 closing fee. FBA sellers pay fulfillment and storage fees on top. Advertising is optional but most brands rely on it.
- Selling plan fee
- Referral fee per sale
- Closing fee on media items
- FBA fulfillment and storage fees
- Advertising costs
- Optional program fees, such as inventory placement or removals
How advertising works on Amazon
Amazon Ads lets sellers bid for placement in search results and on product pages. Sponsored Products promotes individual items, Sponsored Brands promotes your brand and Store, and Sponsored Display reaches shoppers on and off Amazon. You pay per click. The key number is ACoS, ad spend as a share of ad sales, which should stay below your margin after fees for ads to be profitable.
How and when Amazon pays sellers
Amazon holds sales proceeds in your seller account, deducts fees, refunds and other charges, and transfers the balance to your bank account on a regular schedule. Amazon may hold some funds as a reserve, especially for new accounts or delivery dates that have not passed yet. Check the Payments dashboard in Seller Central for your current schedule and reserves.
