Why product research decides most outcomes

Most failed Amazon products fail before launch: the niche was too crowded, the margin too thin after fees, or the product had no reason to win. Advertising and listing work can improve a good product, but they rarely rescue a bad pick. Time spent on research is the cheapest insurance you can buy.

The metrics that matter

You do not need dozens of numbers. These cover demand, competition and economics, which is enough to rank ideas against each other.

  • Search volume for the main keywords and its 12-month trend
  • Estimated monthly units and revenue of the top listings
  • Number of reviews and average rating on page one
  • Share of clicks or sales held by the top three products
  • Average selling price and price stability
  • FBA fee, referral fee and landed cost per unit
  • Advertising competition on the main keywords

Free Amazon tools for product research

Product Opportunity Explorer sits under the Growth menu in Seller Central for eligible Professional accounts. It groups search terms into niches and shows search volume, units sold, average price, click concentration and how many new products entered recently. Brand Analytics, available to brand owners in Brand Registry, adds search query performance and market basket data. The Revenue Calculator estimates fees per unit at current rates.

The Amazon search bar itself is a tool: autocomplete suggestions show what shoppers type, and the first results page shows what they buy. Our guide to Amazon Brand Analytics explains its reports.

Paid product research tools

Third-party tools estimate sales from rank data, track price and rank history, and pull keyword volumes. They are useful for speed and history, but treat sales figures as estimates and cross-check with Amazon's own data where possible. Our Helium 10 guide and roundup of AI tools for Amazon sellers compare options.

Amazon product research, step by step

Run every idea through the same steps so you can compare them fairly.

  • List 10 to 20 ideas from categories you know
  • Check demand and trend for each main keyword
  • Study page one: reviews, ratings, prices, image quality
  • Estimate sales of the top ten and how they are spread
  • Read negative reviews and note fixable problems
  • Model profit after fees, landed cost and ad spend
  • Check gating, certification and hazmat rules
  • Shortlist three ideas and order samples

Mining reviews and questions

Reviews tell you what to build. Collect the one- to three-star reviews from the top listings and group them by theme. A complaint that repeats across several brands is an opportunity. The questions section shows what shoppers cannot find on the listing, which tells you what to put in images and bullets. Amazon's AI shopping assistant also draws on reviews and listing content, so clear answers there help both conversion and discovery.

Running the numbers

Start with the price you expect to sell at, not the price you hope for. Subtract the referral fee (15% in many common categories and 8% in some, per Amazon), the FBA fee for the product's size tier, storage, inbound costs, product cost, freight and duties. Then subtract a realistic advertising cost per unit for the launch period. Amazon's 2026 update raised average FBA fees by about $0.08 per unit from January 15, 2026. Our FBA fees guide lists the components.

Keyword research as product research

Keywords reveal how shoppers describe a need, which sometimes exposes sub-niches the big listings ignore, such as a size, material or use case. Long-tail terms with clear intent and fewer competing products can support a focused product. Our Amazon keyword research guide shows how to build the list.

Checking compliance before you commit

A product can pass every demand and margin test and still be unsellable. Before ordering samples, confirm whether the category or brand is gated, whether the product counts as hazmat, and whether it needs safety testing or certificates, as many children's products, electrical items and topicals do. Check packaging and labeling rules for the marketplace too. These checks take an hour and can save a whole inventory order. Our guide to restricted categories explains approvals.

  • Category or brand gating
  • Hazmat classification
  • Testing and certificates
  • Packaging and labeling rules

Common research mistakes

  • Trusting a single tool's sales estimate
  • Ignoring seasonality in 12-month data
  • Forgetting advertising cost in the margin model
  • Picking a product with no way to differentiate
  • Skipping the approval and compliance check
