Why send external traffic to Amazon at all?

Amazon search is crowded and Sponsored Products costs rise every peak season. Outside traffic reaches people who are not yet searching on Amazon: someone reading a review on Google, watching a creator on TikTok or opening your newsletter. Those shoppers arrive with intent you created, often at a lower cost per sale than a contested keyword on Amazon.

Sales from outside traffic also count as sales. Amazon does not publish its ranking formula, but sellers widely agree that sales velocity and conversion feed organic rank, which is why a well-run external campaign can support the keyword positions you are fighting for in Amazon PPC management.

  • New customers who do not start on Amazon
  • Extra sales velocity during launches and promotions
  • A bonus credit on qualifying sales for brand owners
  • Less dependence on rising Sponsored Products bids

Which external traffic channels work best for Amazon?

The best channel depends on your product and margin. High-intent search traffic converts best, social and creator traffic builds demand, and owned channels such as email are the cheapest to run once you have a list. Most brands start with one paid channel and one owned channel, measure them for a month, then expand.

  • Google Search and Shopping ads for buyers comparing options
  • Meta and TikTok ads for products that demo well on video
  • Creators and affiliates who review or show the product
  • Email and SMS to past customers and subscribers
  • Your brand website with Buy on Amazon buttons
  • Content such as buying guides and comparison articles

How Amazon Attribution tracks outside traffic

Amazon Attribution is Amazon's free measurement tool for off-Amazon marketing. You create a tag for each campaign, ad group or creator, add the tagged URL to the outside ad or link, and Amazon reports what happened after the click. Amazon's advertising site says reports use a 14-day attribution window.

The reports cover engagement (clicks, detail page views, detail page view rate) and conversion (add-to-cart, purchases, units sold, product sales and new-to-brand). Amazon lists search, social, display, video, email and affiliate campaigns as supported. Read more in our Amazon Attribution guide.

What is the Amazon Brand Referral Bonus?

The Brand Referral Bonus pays brand owners a credit on sales that come from their own non-Amazon marketing. Amazon's selling blog describes a bonus averaging 10% of qualifying sales, with the exact rate varying by category and sales price. It is paid as a credit against future referral fees, credited after a two-month waiting period so cancellations and returns can settle.

To qualify, Amazon says you need to sell in the US store on a Professional plan, have your brand enrolled in Brand Registry and send traffic using Amazon Attribution tags. The bonus does not apply to Amazon's own advertising, such as Sponsored Products. Check the Brand Referral Bonus page in Seller Central for the current rates in your categories.

  • Average bonus: about 10% of qualifying sales, varies by category
  • Paid as a credit against future referral fees
  • Requires Brand Registry, a Professional plan and Attribution tags
  • Does not apply to sales from Amazon Ads

How to drive external traffic to Amazon, step by step

A simple process keeps spend under control and makes results comparable across channels.

  • Enroll your brand in Brand Registry and enroll in the Brand Referral Bonus
  • Fix the listing first: images, title, bullets and reviews must convert cold traffic
  • Create one Attribution tag per channel, campaign and creator
  • Send traffic to the product page, a Brand Store page or a landing page
  • Run each test for at least two to four weeks to cover the 14-day window
  • Compare cost per sale against your margin after fees and the bonus credit
  • Scale the channels that pay, cut the ones that do not

Landing page or straight to Amazon?

Sending clicks straight to the detail page is simplest and keeps every sale inside Amazon's attribution. A landing page in between lets you collect emails, show coupons and filter out low-intent clicks, at the cost of one more step. Brands with a strong email programme often use a landing page; brands chasing rank during a launch usually link direct.

Whichever you pick, the listing has to convert. Cold social traffic converts at lower rates than Amazon search shoppers, so weak images or a thin review count will show up quickly as a high cost per sale. Our Amazon product listing optimization guide covers what to fix first.

How to calculate whether outside traffic pays

Treat external traffic like any other ad channel. Divide spend by attributed product sales to get an ACoS for the channel, then compare it with your break-even ACoS, which is your margin after Amazon fees. Add the bonus credit back for brand-registered sales. A channel that looks expensive on day one can still pay once the bonus and repeat purchases are counted, so judge it over a full month.

  • Channel ACoS = spend divided by attributed sales
  • Break-even ACoS = margin after fees and product cost
  • Add back the Brand Referral Bonus credit
  • Track new-to-brand share, not just revenue

Common mistakes with external traffic

Most wasted spend comes from a few avoidable errors.

  • Sending traffic without Attribution tags, so nothing can be measured
  • Pointing ads at a listing with few reviews or weak images
  • Using one tag for every channel, which hides what works
  • Judging results before the 14-day window has closed
  • Ignoring stock: traffic to an out-of-stock listing is lost money

Where PPC Spider helps

PPC Spider runs Amazon ads and external traffic as one plan. SpiderOS monitors bids, budgets, search terms and stock, and we set target ACoS from your product margin after fees, so external channels are judged on profit rather than clicks. PPC plans start at $995 a month and full-service management at $1,950 a month; see Amazon agency pricing or start with a free Amazon audit. If organic rank is the goal, pair this with our guide on how to rank higher on Amazon.
