What to do
Fix titles for the 75-character rule, then images and conversion

Key takeaways

  • Optimise for relevance first, then conversion: both are needed to rank and sell.
  • Rewrite titles to 75 characters yourself and use the 125-character Item Highlights field.
  • Record a baseline and measure conversion, search share and rank after each change.

Listing optimization checklist

  • Title 75 characters or fewer
  • Item Highlights filled
  • Main image on white, fills frame
  • Six or more images plus video
  • Benefit-led bullets
  • A+ Content live
  • Backend terms and attributes complete
  • Baseline metrics recorded

What does Amazon listing optimization improve?

A listing has two jobs. It must be found, which depends on relevance: the right keywords in indexed fields and the right category. And it must sell, which depends on conversion: images, copy, price, reviews and delivery promise. Optimising only for keywords gets impressions without sales; optimising only for looks gets sales from too few shoppers. Good work does both, in that order.

  • Discoverability: keywords, fields, category, attributes
  • Click-through: main image, title, price, rating
  • Conversion: image stack, bullets, A+ Content, reviews
  • Retention: accurate content that reduces returns

Title: 75 characters, primary keyword first

PPC Land reports that since July 27, 2026, product titles must be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces, in every category except media. Titles still over the limit are gradually rewritten by Amazon's AI, and Brand Registry owners get 14 days to review suggestions. Write your own: brand, product type, primary keyword and one or two attributes that drive the choice. Amazon's 2025 rules still apply too: no word more than twice and no banned special characters. Our Amazon product title optimization guide goes deeper.

Item Highlights: the new 125-character field

Item Highlights is a searchable field of up to 125 characters that appears near the title in search results and on the detail page. Use it for the details that used to pad titles: material, key specs, compatibility, use cases. Write it for shoppers first. It is a strong place for secondary keywords that did not fit in the title.

Images: win the click and answer questions

The main image decides whether a shopper clicks. It must follow Amazon's image requirements, including a pure white background, and should show the product clearly, filling most of the frame. Secondary images do the selling: lifestyle in use, scale against a hand or room, key features called out, a comparison or size chart, and what is in the box. Add a video where you can. See our Amazon image requirements guide.

  • Main image: product only, white background, fills the frame
  • Scale image showing real size
  • Feature callouts for top three benefits
  • Lifestyle image in real use
  • Size chart or comparison

Bullets and description: benefits, proof, objections

Use bullets to answer the questions buyers ask before buying. Lead each bullet with a benefit, follow with the feature that delivers it, and include secondary keywords naturally. Read your one to three star reviews and competitors' reviews for objections, then answer them. Clear factual statements also help AI shopping answers: Amazon renamed Rufus to Alexa for Shopping on May 13, 2026, and its answers draw on listing content and reviews.

A+ Content and Brand Story

Brand Registry owners can add A+ Content below the bullets: images, comparison charts and text modules. Use comparison charts to cross-sell your own range and modules to show the product in use. A+ text is not the place for keyword stuffing; it is for conversion. See our Amazon A+ Content guide.

Backend search terms and attributes

Backend search terms hold hidden synonyms, variants and Spanish terms; seller guides put the US limit at about 249 bytes. Attributes such as size, colour, material and audience feed the filters shoppers use to narrow results. Missing attributes make a listing invisible to filtered searches. Our Amazon backend keywords guide covers the hidden field.

Amazon product listing optimization, step by step

Use this order for each ASIN, starting with your best sellers.

  • Build a keyword map from Brand Analytics and search term reports
  • Rewrite the title to 75 characters or fewer
  • Write Item Highlights with secondary keywords
  • Rebuild the image stack and add video
  • Rewrite bullets around benefits and objections
  • Add or refresh A+ Content
  • Fill backend search terms and every attribute
  • Check price and Buy Box against page one
  • Record baseline metrics, then measure after four weeks

How to measure listing optimization results

Record a baseline before you change anything: sessions, unit session percentage (conversion), Search Query Performance impression and purchase share for core keywords, and organic rank. Change one major element at a time where possible, so you know what worked. Brand Registry owners can use Manage Your Experiments to A/B test titles, images, bullets and A+ Content where the ASIN is eligible.

  • Sessions and page views
  • Unit session percentage
  • Impression, click and purchase share
  • Organic keyword rank
  • Return rate
