Key takeaways

  • BSR ranks products by recent and historical sales within a category; lower is better.
  • It changes through the day, so judge trends over 30 to 90 days.
  • BSR is not search rank; improve both by selling more on your key keywords and staying in stock.

What is Amazon best seller rank?

BSR is a ranking of products by sales within a category. Every product with sales gets a rank in its main category and, often, in one or more subcategories, so one product can show several BSR numbers. You can find it on the product detail page in the Product Information or product details section, listed as Best Sellers Rank.

Amazon's Best Sellers pages list the top 100 products in each category and subcategory, and these lists are built from the same sales ranking.

  • Lower number means more sales
  • Separate ranks for category and subcategories
  • Each marketplace has its own ranks
  • Shown on the detail page under product details

How is BSR calculated?

Amazon has said its best sellers ranking is based on sales and is updated hourly to reflect recent and historical sales, but it does not publish the formula. Seller tool makers agree that recent sales weigh more than older sales, which is why a product that stops selling slides slowly rather than instantly. Reviews, ratings and ad spend are not generally described as direct inputs; they affect BSR only through the sales they help create.

  • Based on sales, not reviews
  • Recent sales count more than older ones
  • Historical sales smooth out the rank
  • Exact formula not published by Amazon

How often does BSR update?

BSR changes through the day. Third-party guides commonly say top-ranked products update roughly hourly, while products with lower ranks can update less often, but those tiers come from observation, not from Amazon. Because of this, a single snapshot can mislead. Use a price and rank history tool, such as Keepa, to look at trends over 30 to 90 days.

What is a good BSR on Amazon?

There is no universal good number, because categories differ hugely in size. A rank of 5,000 can mean strong daily sales in a large category such as Home and Kitchen and modest sales in a small one. Compare your BSR with the top products in your own subcategory, and watch whether it is improving over time. Sales estimates from tools based on BSR are approximations; your Seller Central business reports are the real numbers. Seasonal categories also swing: a rank that looks weak in spring can be normal for a product that sells mainly in the fourth quarter.

BSR versus search rank

BSR tells you how a product sells across its whole category. Search rank tells you where it appears for a specific keyword. A product can have an excellent BSR because it sells well on one keyword while ranking nowhere for others. For SEO decisions, track keyword rank and Brand Analytics Search Query Performance alongside BSR. Our how to rank higher on Amazon guide covers search rank.

How to improve Amazon best seller rank

Since BSR follows sales, anything that sustainably lifts sales improves it.

  • Stay in stock; stockouts stop sales and let the rank slide
  • Improve conversion with better images, Item Highlights and A+ Content
  • Win more clicks with a strong main image and competitive price
  • Run Sponsored Products on converting keywords
  • Use deals and coupons for short-term spikes
  • Send tagged external traffic that converts
  • Choose the most accurate category and browse node
  1. 1Stay in stock

    No sales, no rank

  2. 2Win the click

    Main image and price

  3. 3Convert

    Images, highlights, A+

  4. 4Add demand

    Ads, deals, outside traffic

Why BSR differs across categories and marketplaces

Each category and subcategory is ranked separately, so the same product can sit at 4,000 in a large parent category and in the top 20 of a narrow subcategory. Sellers sometimes use that subcategory rank to earn a Best Seller badge, which appears for the top product in a subcategory and can lift click-through. Ranks are also separate for each Amazon marketplace, so a product can be a top seller in the UK and mid-table in the US. When you compare products, compare like with like: same category, same marketplace, same time window.

Does BSR affect search ranking?

BSR itself is a report, not an input you can optimise directly. But the sales behind it are what sellers widely see as a key ranking signal. So the two usually move together: when sales on your main keywords rise, both BSR and search rank tend to improve. Read our Amazon A10 algorithm guide for more on ranking signals.
