Key takeaways

  • A10 is a seller nickname; Amazon has not published an algorithm by that name.
  • Relevance gets you indexed; conversion, sales history and stock decide where you rank.
  • 2026 brought 75-character titles, a 125-character Item Highlights field and Alexa for Shopping.

Is the Amazon A10 algorithm real?

Not as an official product. A9 was the name of Amazon's search technology subsidiary, founded in 2003 in Palo Alto, and its name stuck to the ranking system. Wikipedia notes that Amazon took down the A9.com site after 2019 and the team became Amazon Search. Sellers began saying A10 around the same time to describe a ranking system that seemed to reward conversion and external traffic more than before.

The useful takeaway is not the version number. Amazon keeps retuning search, and the safest strategy is to optimise for what the shopper wants, because that is what Amazon is trying to rank. Our Amazon A9 algorithm guide covers the history in more detail.

How Amazon search ranking works in two stages

Sellers and tool makers describe Amazon search in two broad stages. First, retrieval: Amazon decides which products are relevant enough to show for a search, mainly from the words in your listing, backend search terms and category. Second, ranking: Amazon orders those products by signals that predict a purchase. If your listing is not indexed for a term, no amount of sales will rank it there, so relevance comes first.

  • Stage 1, retrieval: title, Item Highlights, bullets, description, backend terms, category
  • Stage 2, ranking: sales, conversion, click-through, price, reviews, availability
  • Personalisation: location, Prime eligibility and shopper history change what each person sees

Which ranking signals matter most?

Amazon does not publish weights, so any percentage you read online is a guess. Across seller tools and agencies, the most consistent view is that conversion and sales over time carry the most weight once a product is relevant. Click-through rate shows Amazon whether your main image, title and price win attention on the results page. Stock matters because Amazon will not rank what it cannot deliver quickly.

  • Sales velocity and history for the keyword
  • Conversion rate from search
  • Click-through rate on the results page
  • Competitive price and Buy Box ownership
  • Ratings and review count
  • In-stock status and fast delivery
  • Listing completeness and accuracy

What changed in 2026: shorter titles and AI shopping

Two 2026 changes affect how relevance is read. First, Amazon cut product titles to 75 characters, including spaces, for every category except media, with enforcement from July 27, 2026, and added a searchable Item Highlights field of up to 125 characters. Keywords that no longer fit in the title should move there or into bullets and backend terms. See our Amazon product title optimization guide.

Second, Amazon's AI shopping assistant matters more. Amazon says that on May 13, 2026, Rufus was renamed Alexa for Shopping. Conversational answers draw on listing content, reviews and questions, so clear, factual copy that answers buyer questions helps both classic search and AI answers.

Does PPC help organic rank under A10?

Sponsored Products sales are still sales. Ads put a new product in front of shoppers for keywords where it does not yet rank, and the resulting purchases add to its sales history. Many sellers run exact-match campaigns on their most important keywords during a launch for this reason. The catch is cost: ads only help if the listing converts, otherwise you pay for clicks that teach Amazon your product is a poor match.

Does external traffic matter more under A10?

Sellers often claim the A10 era rewards outside traffic. Amazon has not confirmed that, but it clearly wants outside traffic: it pays brand-registered sellers a Brand Referral Bonus on qualifying sales from non-Amazon marketing. Those sales also count toward sales history. See our guide to driving external traffic to Amazon.

How to optimise for the Amazon A10 algorithm

Work through these in order, because each step depends on the one before.

  • Research keywords with Brand Analytics and your search term reports
  • Write a 75-character title with the core keyword and brand
  • Use Item Highlights, bullets and backend terms for secondary keywords
  • Make the main image and price win the click on the results page
  • Raise conversion with strong images, A+ Content and reviews
  • Keep stock in place; stockouts cost rank that takes time to recover
  • Support key terms with exact-match Sponsored Products ads

A10 myths to ignore

Some advice survives because it is hard to disprove. Be sceptical of anything that promises a shortcut.

  • Myth: there is a secret A10 checklist from Amazon. There is no official document
  • Myth: keyword stuffing still works. Shorter titles and policy rules make it risky
  • Myth: seller authority scores decide rank. Amazon has not confirmed any such score
  • Myth: reviews alone move rank. They help conversion, but sales still decide
