What are Walmart dark stores?

A dark store is a retail-style building that only fills online orders. Shoppers never walk in; staff and drivers do. Talk Business and Politics reported in June 2026 that Walmart is testing dark store sites it calls Spark Delivery Depots. They average about 20,000 square feet, usually sit in former drugstores or other vacant retail space, and are tied to a nearby supercenter. Spark drivers pick up popular items there instead of at a busy supercenter.

The logic is simple. Retail consultant David Happe told Talk Business that about 80% of a supercenter's sales come from about 20% of its items, so a small depot stocked with fast sellers can serve most quick orders without the size of a full store.

  • Name: Spark Delivery Depots
  • Size: about 20,000 square feet
  • Sites: former drugstores and vacant retail units
  • Link: each tied to a nearby supercenter
  • Users: Spark delivery drivers, not walk-in shoppers

What has Walmart confirmed about the dark store concept?

Walmart has said little in public. Talk Business reports that testing began in Dallas in 2025 and that the Fayetteville depot, in a closed Walgreens on West Martin Luther King Boulevard, opened in May 2026. More sites are planned in Poughkeepsie, New York, and Carlstadt, New Jersey, with other cities in planning. Local permit filings call the Fayetteville site a Walmart Spark Store, and signs on the doors read Spark Driver entrance.

Walmart's only public comment in that coverage was a short statement that the depot modernizes local retail service, bringing convenience, access and economic value. It has not published a target number of depots or results from the tests. Happe expects 20 to 40 depots before Walmart shares detailed results, but that is his estimate, not a Walmart plan.

Walmart dark stores delivery: how fast is it?

The depots support Walmart's fastest delivery tier. On May 28, 2026, Walmart said 30-minute-or-less delivery was available in 33 US markets, including Dallas, Austin, Houston, Chicago, Atlanta and Denver, for a $10 fee for Walmart+ members. It said 26% of Express Deliveries already arrive within 30 minutes, that more than 100,000 items are eligible, and that it completed millions of these deliveries to more than 19,000 zip codes in the first quarter of 2026.

Walmart describes the service as running on its store footprint and an algorithm that weighs basket size, driver availability and distance from the store. Depots add more pick-up points close to customers without building full stores.

Why Walmart is investing in dark stores

Speed is now central to Walmart's ecommerce growth. Trade press reports Walmart US ecommerce sales reached just under $100 billion in 2025, up 25%, with store-fulfilled and Marketplace orders leading the growth. Walmart's CFO has said express delivery fees helped turn ecommerce cash positive. Dark stores let Walmart add fast delivery capacity in dense areas where supercenters are crowded, without taking floor space from in-store shoppers.

Do Marketplace items ship from Walmart dark stores?

Not as far as Walmart has said. None of the reporting we read says third-party Marketplace inventory is stocked in Spark Delivery Depots, and Walmart's 30-minute delivery announcement does not mention Marketplace sellers. The depots appear to carry Walmart's own fast-moving items from the linked supercenter. Treat any claim that your products will be in a dark store as unconfirmed until Walmart announces it in Seller Center.

What dark stores mean for Walmart Marketplace sellers

The indirect effect is real. When shoppers can get groceries and household items in 30 minutes, slower delivery looks worse by comparison, and Walmart rewards fast, reliable shipping in its own programs. Walmart Fulfillment Services (WFS) stores and ships third-party inventory with two-day shipping, and at its August 2025 Grow Summit Walmart said it was expanding WFS next-day delivery in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Houston, Atlanta and other major cities, starting with popular items.

At the same event, Walmart's CFO said about 44% of Marketplace volume moves through WFS, and Walmart said sellers using WFS see an average 50% lift in gross merchandise value on items marked Walmart Fulfilled and 2-Day Shipping. Those are Walmart's own figures, but they show the direction: speed badges matter. Our Walmart vs Amazon for sellers guide compares the fulfillment options in more detail.

Listings and ads matter more in a speed race

Faster delivery helps only if shoppers find your item. Strong titles, complete attributes and good images lift conversion, and our Walmart listing optimization guide covers the fields that count. Sponsored Search can push your WFS items into view when delivery speed becomes a filter. Follow the latest changes on our Walmart Marketplace news for October 2026 page.
