What Whatnot changed

Until now Whatnot absorbed the extra postage USPS assessed when a parcel shipped on a Whatnot-generated label weighed more than declared. For shipments sent on or after November 4, US sellers pay those weight-based adjustments. Whatnot told sellers these are charges assessed by USPS with no extra Whatnot fee.

Sellers whose first Whatnot sale came on or after September 5, 2026 are outside the first rollout and will get separate notice before the rule applies to them, according to Value Added Resource.

What Whatnot still covers

Whatnot keeps paying for adjustments on shipments sent before November 4, for incorrect package dimensions, for hazardous materials labeling and, for now, for UPS shipments. It will also keep covering extra label costs for up to five qualifying shipping corrections a week when sellers update package details before generating a label, subject to existing limits. That last point matters: fixing a weight before the label exists is free, fixing it after USPS measures the box is not.

How to appeal a charge

Charges appear in a Carrier Adjustments dashboard that shows the original shipping details, the carrier's measurements and the extra postage. Sellers have 45 days from the charge date to appeal. USPS makes the final decision and can take up to 90 days. Whatnot began showing sellers their adjustment data in April and says more than eight in ten sellers who used to receive adjustments have since reduced them.

Why this lands now

Live selling peaks in the fourth quarter, when sellers pack the most bundles and mystery boxes, the items whose weights drift most from a shipping profile. The change also arrives as Whatnot reshapes shipping, including a temporary $12.99 USPS Flat Rate subsidy since July 31 and a UPS Ground Saver test for heavier parcels. Buyers pay the shipping price shown at checkout, so any gap between the declared and real weight now comes out of the seller's margin, not Whatnot's.

So what: the money and risk math

The cost is the difference between the postage for the declared weight and the postage for the real weight, multiplied by how often you under-declare. Whatnot's buyer prices show how steep the steps are at light weights: $4.47 under 4 oz, $4.85 for 4 to 8 oz, $5.25 for 8 to 12 oz and $6.75 for 12 to 16 oz, per Value Added Resource. Those are buyer-facing prices, not the USPS adjustment itself, but they show that crossing one weight band can add dollars, not cents, to a single parcel.

Worked example with illustrative numbers

These numbers are invented to show the arithmetic. A trading card seller ships 600 orders a month and uses a 7 oz profile for bundles that often pack at 9 oz once a top loader and bubble mailer are added. If 15% of parcels, 90 a month, land one band higher and each adjustment costs $0.60, that is $54 a month. If 30 of those also cross into the next band at $1.90 each, add $57. The total, about $111 a month or $1,332 a year, used to be Whatnot's cost and is now the seller's. Weighing a packed sample and raising the profile to 10 oz removes most of it.

Whatnot weight check, this week

  • Weigh five packed orders per profile
  • Raise profiles below packed weight
  • Fix bundles before the label prints
  • Review Carrier Adjustments weekly
  • Appeal wrong charges within 45 days
  • Reprice heavy bundles

What sellers should do this week

  • Packer: weigh five fully packed orders for each shipping profile, including tape, mailer and inserts. Metric: declared weight at or above the real packed weight.
  • Owner: update shipping profiles and bundle increments in Whatnot so the default weight matches the packed weight. Metric: no profile below its sampled average.
  • Packer: correct any oversized bundle before printing the label, using the five free corrections a week. Metric: corrections used before label, not adjustments after.
  • Bookkeeper: check the Carrier Adjustments dashboard every week and log each charge by profile. Metric: adjustment dollars per 100 orders falling week over week.
  • Owner: appeal any charge where your scale photo shows the declared weight was right, within 45 days. Metric: appeals filed before the deadline and their outcome.
  • Owner: price heavy bundles with the real weight in mind, or move them to Flat Rate where it fits. Metric: shipping cost as a share of order value stays flat.

When this does not apply

UPS shipments, dimension and hazmat adjustments, and shipments sent before November 4 stay with Whatnot for now. Newer sellers whose first sale came on or after September 5 should wait for Whatnot's separate notice. Sellers who already weigh every packed order will see little change. If Whatnot changes the Flat Rate subsidy, it says it will give at least one month's notice, so revisit this then.
