What Etsy announced
Value Added Resource reported the changes on October 22, covering an updated AI creations policy, revised Listing Image Requirements and a seller handbook announcement. The update has two halves: what can be sold, and how it must be shown. No grace period for existing listings was stated.
AI-generated patterns and instructions are banned
Etsy now prohibits AI-generated functional instructions, including knitting, crochet, sewing, embroidery, quilting and beading patterns, recipes, woodworking and construction plans, instruction manuals and other task guides. These must be the seller's own original work. Etsy's reasoning is that buyers rely on such products to produce a result, and AI errors are often found only after time and materials are spent. AI prompt bundles stay banned, as they have been since 2024.
We launch and run brands on Walmart, Target Plus, TikTok Shop and more, from one team.
Mass-automated listings are out
Bot-generated content and mass-automated product or listing creation without individual human creative input and oversight are now prohibited. Each item needs direct prompting, curation and creative input. Etsy has not defined how much human involvement is enough or said whether third-party listing and cross-listing tools are affected, though its API remains supported. AI digital art remains allowed if the seller discloses AI use and does not present the work as fully handmade.
New listing photo rules
Most listings now need at least one unedited photograph of the actual item against a real background. Cropping, resizing, straightening, lighting or exposure changes and background swaps are not allowed on that photo. Other images may be edited, including with AI, if they represent the item accurately. Patterns, recipes and seeds need at least one real, unedited photo of a finished result made or grown with the product.
- Print on demand may use authorized stock mockups
- Digital downloads need previews or excerpts
- Audio products may use representative imagery if not misleading
- Made-to-order sellers should show real past work
- The old ban on placeholder mockups for personalized items was removed
Fix list for Etsy shops
- Add one unedited real photo
- Remove AI-written instructions
- Disclose AI use in art
- Review cross-listing tool output
- Keep originals as evidence
How Etsy will enforce it
Misleading listings can be removed, and repeat violations can lead to shop removal. Sellers may owe refunds when buyers open cases for items that differ from the listing. Etsy will flag detected AI images at upload, plans to extend checks to existing listings, and added a way for users to report misleading AI imagery. Appeals go through the Policy Violations page in Shop Manager. Etsy has a history of mistaken automated takedowns, so keep originals and process photos as evidence.
What this means for multichannel sellers
Many brands use the same AI-built images and copy across Amazon, Etsy and Shopify. Etsy is now stricter than most on proof of the real item. If you sell handmade or design-led products on Amazon too, our Amazon product photography and Amazon image requirements guides show what each channel expects.
What PPC Spider recommends this week
Audit your top listings first: add one real, unedited photo, remove any AI-generated instructions and record how each listing was made. Our ecommerce creative agency team shoots real product photography that works across marketplaces. More updates are on the marketplace news channel.
