Who needs Amazon seller insurance?
Under Amazon's seller agreement, sellers must obtain commercial liability insurance within 30 days after monthly gross proceeds on Amazon.com exceed $10,000, or earlier if Amazon asks. That rule stays in place.
From November 2, 2026, Amazon adds a second trigger. Sellers with products in categories subject to enhanced safety listing requirements need a policy regardless of sales. Amazon's notice, posted to the US Seller Forums on September 3, 2026, applies this to new and existing listings.
- Monthly Amazon.com gross proceeds above $10,000
- Products in enhanced safety categories, from November 2, 2026
- Any seller Amazon specifically asks to provide cover
Which categories trigger insurance from November 2?
Amazon's notice names children's products, cosmetic and ingestible products, and lithium battery products, and says the categories include but are not limited to these. Trade coverage of the enhanced safety program lists a wider group. Check Account Health in Seller Central for the requirements that apply to your specific products.
- Children's products
- Consumable and ingestible products, including cosmetics
- Lithium battery products
- Fire related products and personal safety equipment
- Household devices such as small kitchen appliances
- Home medical devices
- Outdoor power and heating equipment
- Sleep, transport and water safety products

What the policy must include
Amazon's commercial liability insurance requirements, as summarized by trade press, set out the minimum terms. Ask your broker to confirm each one in writing before you buy, because a policy that misses any of them can be rejected.
- Commercial general, umbrella or excess liability
- At least $1M per occurrence and $1M in the aggregate
- Occurrence basis, except for certain product categories
- Covers products and completed operations, including bodily injury
- Deductible no higher than $10,000, shown on the certificate
- Covers all products you list on Amazon.com
- Amazon.com Services LLC and its affiliates and assignees as additional insureds
- Named insured matches the legal entity on your Amazon account
Policy must haves
- $1M per occurrence and aggregate
- Occurrence basis where required
- Deductible $10,000 or less
- Covers all Amazon.com products
- Amazon as additional insured
- Named insured matches your entity
New rule for sellers based in Mainland China
From November 2, 2026, sellers based in Mainland China must get new policies through the Amazon Insurance Accelerator, a network of insurers Amazon has pre vetted. Amazon will reject newly submitted policies from these sellers that were bought elsewhere. A valid, compliant policy submitted before November 2 can be used until it expires; the renewal must then come through the Accelerator.
The rule depends on where the seller is based, not where products are made. A US brand that sources from Chinese factories is not covered by this specific change.
How to buy and submit a policy
Many sellers use the Amazon Insurance Accelerator, which connects sellers with insurers familiar with Amazon's requirements. Others use an independent broker. Either way, the steps are similar.
- Check Account Health for any insurance requirement on your account
- List all products you sell, with categories and annual sales
- Get quotes that state each Amazon requirement
- Buy the policy and request a certificate of insurance
- Upload the certificate in Seller Central before the deadline
- Set a reminder to renew before the policy expires
What happens if you do not comply?
Amazon can reject a policy that does not meet its terms, and listings in enhanced safety categories depend on meeting their requirements. Trade reports say affected sellers have received emails with a deadline to submit proof, and that listings can be deactivated if they do not. Listings that cannot be sold also cannot run Sponsored Products ads, so a missing certificate can stop both sales and advertising.
Treat insurance like any other account health item, and track it with the rest of your compliance documents. Our Amazon account health guide explains how Amazon flags these issues.
How much does Amazon seller insurance cost?
Premiums depend on product type, sales volume, claims history and the insurer. Higher risk categories such as ingestibles, children's products and batteries cost more to insure. Get at least two quotes, and compare the full terms, not just the premium.
Budget the premium as a fixed annual cost in your margin model and your Amazon seller cash flow forecast.
