How many keywords should an Amazon listing have?
There is no ideal number. A listing targets one primary keyword, the phrase that best describes the product and has strong demand. It supports that with three to eight secondary keywords for key features, sizes and uses, and a longer tail of synonyms, variants and audiences. What matters is that every relevant word appears in at least one indexed field, without repeating words to fill space.
Your keyword list should come from research, not guesswork. See our Amazon keyword research guide for the process.
- Primary keyword: one, in the title
- Secondary keywords: a few, in Item Highlights and bullets
- Long tail and synonyms: many, in bullets and backend
- Ad keywords: all of the above, tested in campaigns
Types of Amazon keywords, with examples
Using a stainless steel water bottle as the product, here is how keyword types differ.
- Head term: water bottle
- Primary: insulated water bottle
- Secondary: 32 oz water bottle, leakproof water bottle
- Long tail: insulated water bottle with straw lid for gym
- Synonyms: flask, canteen, thermos
- Audience and use: kids, hiking, office
- Spanish: botella de agua
- Branded: your brand plus product type, used in ads to defend your listing
Keyword research, copy and backend terms written from search data, then tested and kept current. Priced per ASIN, with an ongoing SEO plan for catalogs that keep moving.
Example 1: insulated water bottle
Title, 69 characters: BrandName Insulated Water Bottle 32 oz Stainless Steel with Straw Lid.
Item Highlights: Leakproof, BPA free, keeps drinks cold 24 hours, fits most cup holders, for gym, hiking and office. Only claim figures you have tested.
Backend search terms: flask canteen thermos jug botella de agua kids school sports travel coffee tea metal reusable.
Notice that no word repeats across fields. Water, bottle and steel appear once, in the title, and Amazon can combine them with words elsewhere. The brand name sits in the title only, never in the backend field, and the capacity is written as a numeral to save space.
Example 2: yoga mat
Title, 61 characters: BrandName Yoga Mat 6mm Thick Non Slip Exercise Mat with Strap.
Item Highlights: TPE foam, 72 x 24 inches, lightweight for travel, for pilates, stretching and home workouts.
Backend search terms: fitness gym floor workout pad cushion women men beginners hot pilates esterilla carrying.
Example 3: dog bed
Title, 64 characters: BrandName Orthopedic Dog Bed for Large Dogs Washable Cover, Grey.
Item Highlights: Egg crate foam, removable machine washable cover, non skid bottom, for senior dogs and joint support.
Backend search terms: pet mattress cushion couch kennel crate pad puppy big xl memory foam calming lounger cama perro.
How to choose the primary keyword
Pick the phrase that is most relevant, has meaningful search volume and converts. In Brand Analytics Search Query Performance, look for queries where your purchase share is healthy; in your search term report, look for the term with the most orders at a sustainable ACoS. If the biggest head term is dominated by products with thousands of reviews, a more specific primary keyword can be the better first target. See our Amazon long tail keywords guide.
Keyword placement rules for 2026
PPC Land reports that since July 27, 2026, titles must be 75 characters or fewer, including spaces, in all categories except media, and that titles still over the limit are gradually rewritten by Amazon's AI. Item Highlights gives you up to 125 more searchable characters. Amazon's 2025 title rules also still apply: no word more than twice, and no special characters such as exclamation marks or dollar signs unless part of the brand name.
- Title: brand, product type, primary keyword, one or two key attributes
- Item Highlights: features, materials, uses
- Bullets: benefits with supporting phrases
- Backend: synonyms, variants, Spanish, audiences
- Attributes: size, colour, material for filters
Keyword placement check
- Primary keyword in title
- Title 75 characters or fewer
- No word more than twice in title
- Secondary terms in Item Highlights
- Synonyms in backend, no repeats
- No brand names in backend
Keyword examples for Amazon PPC
In ads, the same list is organised by match type. Put proven converters in exact match with their own bids, use phrase match for close variants, and use broad and auto campaigns to discover new terms. Add negative keywords for searches that describe other products, such as glass water bottle for a steel bottle. Our Amazon PPC management service runs this weekly.
