What is Walmart Sponsored Search?
Walmart Connect is Walmart's retail media business. Its Sponsored Search solutions are Sponsored Products, Sponsored Brands and Sponsored Videos, and Walmart says campaigns can be measured and optimised with closed loop data from Walmart shoppers. For marketplace sellers, Sponsored Products is the core format: ads for individual items shown in search results, carousels and on product pages, charged on a cost per click basis.
Walmart also runs a partner directory of agencies and tools for advertisers who want help. Our Walmart advertising agency page explains how we manage it.
- Sponsored Products: individual items in search and product pages
- Sponsored Brands: brand logo, headline and several items
- Sponsored Videos: video ads in search results
- Onsite Display: banner style ads across Walmart.com
Eligibility: fix the listing before you advertise
Guides to Walmart Sponsored Products say an item must be published on Walmart.com, in stock and winning the Buy Box to serve ads. That makes price, stock and delivery speed part of PPC management. If you lose the Buy Box to another seller or run out of stock, your ads stop. Check listing quality and price before raising bids. Our guide on how to sell on Walmart covers WFS and the listing basics.

Automatic vs manual campaigns
Walmart Connect's help documentation describes two targeting types. Automatic campaigns use Walmart's machine learning to choose where ads show, based on your item content; they suit new products, reach and always on coverage. Manual campaigns let you choose the keywords or products you target, with a narrower set of placements. Manual keyword campaigns use broad, phrase and exact match.
The usual workflow mirrors Amazon: run automatic campaigns to discover search terms, review the keyword reports, then move proven terms into manual campaigns where you control bids by match type, and add negative keywords to stop wasted spend.

Bidding and budgets
You set a cost per click bid, and relevance plus bid decide whether your ad wins a placement. Start from margin: the most you can pay per click is your profit per order multiplied by your conversion rate. Walmart's suggested bids are a guide, not a target.
Walmart Connect's help centre describes two budget controls: a total budget for the life of the campaign and a daily limit. Unused daily budget rolls over to the next day, but daily spend never exceeds twice the daily limit. Minimum bids and budgets vary by market and change over time, so check them in the ad console rather than relying on old guides. Our Amazon PPC bidding strategies guide explains margin based bidding that applies to both platforms.
Where Walmart Sponsored Products appear
Placements include search in grid positions, carousels on search and product pages, and a placement near the Buy Box on product pages. Recent guides also list placements such as My Items and Stock Up. Which placements you get depends on campaign type, with automatic campaigns usually reaching more of them. Review placement reports regularly and shift budget toward the ones that convert.
How Walmart PPC differs from Amazon PPC
Sellers who know Amazon Ads learn Walmart quickly, but a straight copy of an Amazon account rarely works. Amazon Ads describes Sponsored Products as a cost per click auction where you pay only when a shopper clicks; Walmart is also cost per click, but its ad eligibility, placements, budget rules and reporting differ. Walmart search traffic is smaller for most categories, so keyword lists are shorter and data builds more slowly. Plan for longer test periods and fewer, broader campaigns at the start. Our Walmart vs Amazon for sellers comparison covers the wider differences.
- Walmart: Buy Box and stock required to serve ads
- Walmart: total and daily budgets with rollover
- Walmart: fewer search terms, slower data
- Amazon: more ad types, deeper reporting
- Both: cost per click, keyword and product targeting
A multi-platform strategy for Amazon and Walmart sellers
Treat the two marketplaces as separate profit centres that share data. Use Amazon search term reports to seed Walmart manual campaigns, because shopper language overlaps, but set Walmart bids from Walmart conversion data once it exists. Keep prices consistent across both, since price drives the Buy Box on Walmart and the Featured Offer on Amazon. Share inventory planning, because a stockout on one channel can pull ads and rank down on that channel. Our Amazon PPC strategy guide explains the structure we mirror on Walmart.
