Who it affects
TikTok Shop sellers expanding to new countries
What to do
Expand with a local registration or an official cross-border program

Key takeaways

  • A TikTok Shop's country is tied to its verified entity, tax and bank details, not to your app region.
  • Misstating location or ownership risks suspension and frozen or withheld payouts under TikTok's seller terms.
  • Expand with a legitimate local registration or an official program such as Sell Across Europe.

What does region mean on TikTok Shop?

Sellers often mix up three different things. Your TikTok account region affects which content and features you see in the app. Your shop's selling markets decide where buyers can purchase your products. Your Seller Center registration country is the legal and financial base of the shop: the entity, tax number, address and bank account TikTok verified when you onboarded.

Only the first can drift with your location. The selling markets and the registration country follow TikTok Shop's rules for each market, and we found no official self-serve option to move an existing shop's registration from one country to another. Agencies that work with TikTok Shop describe the same thing: expansion usually means a new registration or an approved cross-border lane, not a switch.

  • App region: what content you see
  • Selling markets: where buyers can order
  • Registration country: the entity, tax and bank details behind the shop

Why sellers try to switch region

The reasons are understandable. TikTok Shop is not open in every country, some markets have stronger demand or lower competition, and sellers outside the US often want access to US buyers. Online videos promise quick fixes such as changing the app region, using a VPN or a SIM card from another country. These may change what you see in the app, but they do not change the country your shop is registered in, and they can create a mismatch between your account and your verified details.

The dangers of switching TikTok Shop region

TikTok's US Seller Terms of Service require you to provide accurate and complete information about you and your business, keep your account information accurate at all times and promptly tell TikTok when your business information changes. The terms say TikTok may suspend or permanently disable a Seller Center account if it reasonably believes the terms or policies were broken, and that payments may be frozen, delayed or withheld after a violation.

That is where a region workaround becomes expensive. A seller who misstates where the business is located or who owns it is exposed on every one of those points at once.

  • Account suspension or permanent loss of Seller Center access
  • Payouts frozen, delayed or withheld
  • Listings removed and promotions withdrawn without notice
  • Termination if the payment provider refuses service
  • Enforcement spreading to linked accounts
  • Tax and customs exposure in the market you sell into

Before you enter a new market

  • Market open to sellers
  • Legitimate entity in place
  • Bank account in entity name
  • VAT or sales tax registered
  • Labelling and safety checked
  • Fulfillment route planned

Payouts and bank accounts

Payouts are the most common pain point. For US sellers, TikTok's terms say you must agree to the third-party payment provider terms, including Hyperwallet's, and that payment onboarding may require information about you and your business. If the payment provider refuses to provide services, TikTok may terminate the Seller Center account. A bank account in a different country or a different name from the registered business is a frequent reason for failed verification and held funds.

TikTok may also hold a reserve on your account and offset fees, refunds and chargebacks against what you are owed, so a held account can leave significant cash stuck while you appeal.

Linked accounts and enforcement

TikTok's Seller Enforcement Policy, updated in October 2026, sets fund withholding periods of 45, 90 or 365 days depending on severity and includes rules on connected accounts. If you open a second shop with shared contact, device or bank details to get into a new market, a violation on one shop can affect the other. Read our summary of the TikTok Shop seller enforcement policy before you open any additional shop.

New shops also start without performance history. Our guide to the TikTok Shop Performance Score explains why a new shop needs delivered orders before it qualifies for campaigns and affiliate programs.

Compliance and inventory in the new market

Even with a clean registration, each market has its own rules. Product labelling, safety documentation, consumer information and tax registration follow the destination country. In Europe, Ship24 notes that a single seller account does not consolidate VAT, product compliance or consumer law, and that the UK sits outside the EU customs union, so UK and EU orders carry separate logistics and tax consequences.

Inventory needs planning too. You either hold stock in one place and ship cross-border, with longer delivery times that can weigh on shipping metrics, or hold stock in several countries and manage more complexity. Plan this before you list, not after the first late orders.

The safe way to expand to new TikTok Shop markets

Work through these steps before you list in any new country.

  • Confirm TikTok Shop is open to sellers in the target market
  • Check whether a cross-border program covers your route
  • If not, register a legitimate local entity or partner with one
  • Open a bank account in the registered entity's name
  • Register for VAT or sales tax and any producer obligations
  • Check product labelling and safety rules for that market
  • Plan fulfillment and delivery times before launch
  • Keep Seller Center information current as anything changes

What is Sell Across Europe?

Sell Across Europe is TikTok's official route for intra-EU expansion. TikTok announced in May 2026 that TikTok Shop would launch in Austria, Belgium, the Netherlands and Poland on June 15, 2026, joining France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain and the UK. Per Social Media Today's report of the announcement, Sell Across Europe becomes available shortly after a seller's initial market launch and lets sellers localise product descriptions and ship directly to other EU markets through TikTok Shop partnered logistics or approved carriers. Our Amazon international expansion guide covers the same tax and compliance groundwork for Amazon.
