Personal or business eBay seller account?

eBay offers two account types. A personal account suits individuals selling their own items or testing the channel. A business account suits registered companies: it shows your business name, lets you present business details to buyers and fits sellers who need invoices and tax records in the company's name.

You can sell from either type, and a personal account can be converted to business later. If you already trade as a company or plan to sell new products at volume, start with a business account so verification is done once.

What eBay verifies when you register to sell

eBay's help pages say it verifies three things: your identity, the account that receives payouts and, where relevant, your business details. Verification happens at registration or when you change key details. Until it is complete, you may not receive payouts. Use the name exactly as it appears on your ID and make sure details match across documents.

  • Individuals (US): full name, address, date of birth and Social Security Number
  • Businesses (US): legal business name, any DBA name and EIN
  • Businesses: business address and phone number
  • Businesses: details of beneficial owners, officers or account managers
  • Payouts: a checking account in the same name as the eBay account
  • Business accounts need a business bank account under the registered business name

eBay seller fees in 2026

eBay's fee page for most categories on eBay.com lists 250 zero insertion fee listings per month, then $0.35 per listing. When an item sells, the final value fee is 13.6% of the total sale amount up to $7,500 per item, and 2.35% on any portion above $7,500. A per-order fee of $0.30 applies to orders of $10 or less, and $0.40 above $10.

Rates differ in some categories, and optional upgrades, promoted listings and store subscriptions add cost. Always check eBay's fee page for your category before pricing.

  • Free listings: 250 per month
  • Insertion fee after that: $0.35
  • Final value fee: 13.6% up to $7,500 per item, most categories
  • Per-order fee: $0.30 or $0.40

Should you open an eBay Store?

An eBay Store is a monthly subscription that adds free listings, a branded storefront and selling tools. It makes sense once you list more than the free allowance each month or want a branded page to send buyers to. Compare the store fee with the insertion fees you would otherwise pay before subscribing.

Setting up policies and Seller Hub

Seller Hub is eBay's dashboard for listings, orders, performance and marketing. Before you list in volume, set business policies for shipping, returns and payment so every listing uses the same rules. Clear returns and fast handling times protect your seller performance level, which affects visibility in search.

  • Shipping policy with realistic handling time
  • Returns policy, ideally 30 days
  • Payment policy and payout schedule
  • Item specifics filled in for every listing
  • Sharp photos on a clean background

Common setup problems and how to avoid them

Most delays come from mismatched details. eBay advises using the same name as on your ID, avoiding shortened names and making sure documents are readable. If eBay cannot verify something, it may ask for more information or show a banner on your account with next steps. New sellers can also face selling limits on how many items or how much value they can list at first; these rise as you build a track record.

eBay alongside Amazon and Shopify

eBay works well as a second marketplace for brands already selling elsewhere. Shopify's Marketplace Connect app syncs products, orders and inventory with eBay, Amazon, Walmart and Target Plus. Amazon also said at Accelerate 2026 that new tools would let sellers manage catalog, orders and inventory across Amazon, Walmart, eBay, TikTok Shop and Shopify from Seller Central.
