What Shopify announced

Shopify introduced Canvas on October 1. It shows every page of a store side by side, so a merchant can pan across the whole site and zoom into details. You can click an element to edit it directly or ask Sidekick for the change in plain language instead of hunting through a settings panel. Shopify said Canvas would roll out to merchants over the following days.

How Sidekick works inside Canvas

According to Shopify, Sidekick asks questions, proposes approaches, takes feedback and remembers preferences and earlier design decisions. It works directly on the theme's files, validates its own code and takes screenshots to check its work before handing it back. It can handle a small section change or a store-wide redesign.

The preview is a render of the store's real code rather than a static mockup, so pages can be checked with full interactivity and animation, with different products and collections, and at different screen sizes.

What Shopify says it is not yet

Ben Sehl, Director of Product at Shopify, said Canvas is early and "not replacing the existing editor yet", and Shopify acknowledged gaps it still needs to close. A roundup by Consensus, citing Shopify's requirements page, lists launch limits: early access for certain stores, desktop only, and no support yet for third-party Theme Store themes, Markets, rollouts, translations, or app blocks and embeds. It also reports that themes edited in Canvas do not receive theme updates. Check Shopify's own requirements page before you start, because these limits may change.

Shopify design changes this autumn

  1. Canvas announced and rolling out

  2. Discounts can be tested in Rollouts

  3. Sidekick in checkout and accounts editor

  4. Black Friday: freeze big design changes

Why it matters for DTC brands

Design changes that used to need a developer or agency sprint can now be drafted in a conversation. That lowers the cost of testing new landing pages, collection layouts and promotional banners. The risk is the same speed working against you: an AI redesign of a live store in late October can break conversion paths that took years to tune. Treat Canvas as a fast way to draft, then review every change like you would a developer's pull request.

If your store depends on apps for reviews, subscriptions or upsells, the missing app block support is the biggest constraint for now. Our list of the best Shopify apps explains which app types usually sit on key pages.

A safe way to try Canvas before Black Friday

Use a duplicate theme so nothing reaches shoppers until you approve it.

  • Duplicate your live theme and work only on the copy
  • Confirm your theme and apps are supported first
  • Ask Sidekick for one page at a time, not the whole store
  • Check mobile layouts, checkout links and tracking pixels
  • Remember Canvas-edited themes may miss theme updates
  • Freeze design changes during your peak sales week

Other Shopify updates this month

Canvas was part of a busy October. Sidekick also arrived in the checkout and accounts editor on October 13, and Shopify added discounts to Rollouts so merchants can schedule and test offers. Follow these on our Shopify and DTC news channel.

What PPC Spider recommends this week

Use Canvas to draft landing pages for paid traffic, then test them against your current pages with real ad spend. Our Shopify DTC agency team runs store and ads work together, and our Shopify marketing agency page covers paid social and search. A free audit is a good start if you also sell on Amazon.
