Build brand and ingredient search demand before Black Friday Week instead of relying on a deeper discount

Who won beauty at Prime Big Deal Days

Market Defense says 32% of Amazon shoppers bought beauty during the event, up from 22% and third place in 2025, which moved beauty to first. Numerator's shopper panel also lists beauty and cosmetics as the top category, ahead of apparel and health and wellness. La Roche-Posay was the single biggest beauty brand at 8.9% of category sales.

The winners were dermatologist brands and Korean skincare. La Roche-Posay, CeraVe, EltaMD, Vanicream and Differin together held 20.8% of beauty sales, up from 17.1% a year earlier. Medicube, Biodance, Anua and Dr.Althea held 12.8%, up from 10.6%, and seven of the ten most clicked beauty products. Mighty Patch Original was the top beauty product, and four of the top ten skincare products were breakout or pore treatments.

Two smaller signals stand out. Just For Men ranked fourth in hair care with a share seven times its 2025 level, and Rogaine's share rose about 57%. In fragrance, Armaf, Nautica, Rasasi and Afnan held four of the top ten spots, double last year.

The surprise: deep discounts, flat prices

Amazon's main deals page listed 7,384 deals averaging 30% off, and beauty deals averaged 30.6%, with more than half in the 30% to 39% band and about one in nine above 40%. Yet Market Defense found the typical price paid for beauty fell less than 1%, compared with almost 6% at Prime Day in June. Shoppers mostly bought brands they already wanted rather than whatever was cheapest.

Search data says the same. Searches for a specific product or ingredient converted at 18.0%, up from 11.6%, and non-branded beauty searches converted at 14.7%, up from 10.6%. Creators and affiliates drove 21.9% of US online sales during the event, per the report, and Skai data showed 83% of Amazon ad spend landed before the event opened. The brands that won had built demand before day one.

The wider event numbers

Market Defense puts US online spending across all retailers at $9.86 billion, up 8.5% from $9.09 billion in 2025, with 52% on phones. Numerator's tracker shows an average Amazon order of $48.74, 54% of households placing two or more orders, and $114.01 of spend per household, below $121.96 at Prime Day. Average cost per click fell 9% to $1.46 in Skai's data. Satisfaction slipped: 55% of shoppers were very or extremely satisfied, down from 58% in 2025.

So what for a brand's P&L

If a 30% discount does not move the price shoppers actually pay, part of that discount is simply margin handed to people who would have bought anyway. The money in this event went to brands shoppers searched for by name or ingredient. For Black Friday Week, the cheaper lever is demand built in the next three weeks, not a deeper deal on the day.

Worked example with illustrative numbers

These numbers are invented to show the math. A $25 serum pays a 15% referral fee ($3.75), $4.00 of FBA fees and $5.00 product cost, leaving $12.25 before ads. At 30% off the price is $17.50, the referral fee drops to $2.63, and $5.87 is left. The brand needs 2.1 times the units just to earn the same profit, before Amazon's deal fees.

At 20% off the price is $20.00, the fee $3.00, and $8.00 is left, so it needs 1.5 times the units. If shoppers are buying a brand they already searched for, the 20% deal plus a creator push and brand search ads may beat the 30% deal on profit. Run your own numbers in the Amazon PPC budget calculator.

What sellers should do before Black Friday Week

  • Brand manager: in Brand Analytics, pull the top ingredient and product name searches that led to your sales in October. Metric: a list of 10 terms with conversion share.
  • PPC manager: move budget into exact match campaigns on those ingredient and brand terms now, not on event day, as the Amazon branded keyword bidding guide explains. Metric: top of search impression share on those terms.
  • Marketing lead: brief creators and affiliates with gift angles this week, using the UGC marketing playbook. Metric: Amazon Attribution sales from creator links.
  • Finance lead: model profit per unit at 20% and 30% off, including deal fees. Metric: break even units at each depth.
  • Listing owner: lead the title and first image with the active ingredient and use, and check claims against the beauty listing compliance rules. Metric: unit session percentage on deal days.

When this does not apply

The figures come from Market Defense, an agency, and its methodology is not published, so treat them as one view, not Amazon data. A new brand with no search demand may need a deeper first deal to earn reviews. Gift-led categories behave differently in November: Market Defense found only 20% bought gifts in October, so Black Friday shoppers may be more open to unknown brands.
