What Amazon said about Alexa for Shopping on October 29

On the Q3 2026 call, Jassy gave three numbers for the assistant: more than 400 million customers used it in the past 12 months, customer interactions rose 570% year over year, and US customers who use it spend 50% more per order than those who do not. Modern Retail reported the user count was 350 million at the end of July, so about 50 million more customers tried it in roughly three months.

Jassy also said Amazon expects that Alexa for Shopping is going to be the primary shopping agent customers use to shop Amazon. He pointed to its access to a shopper's order history, shipping address and payment details as the advantage over outside agents.

What Alexa for Shopping is

Alexa for Shopping is the assistant that replaced the Rufus name in May 2026, when Amazon merged Rufus with Alexa+. Shoppers ask questions in the main search bar or app and get product research, side by side comparisons, a year of price history, gift ideas and deal tracking. Our Alexa for Shopping guide covers how it picks products and how listings get surfaced.

Ahead of the holidays Amazon said it added more than 100 new capabilities, including building and editing gift lists and registries and managing Subscribe and Save orders from the assistant, according to Modern Retail.

How Alexa for Shopping got here

  1. Amazon launches Rufus

  2. Rufus becomes Alexa for Shopping

  3. 350M customers

  4. Amazon blocks Meta's Muse

  5. 400M+ customers on Q3 call

Amazon on outside AI shopping agents

Asked whether shopping through outside agents is hurting Amazon's ad business, Jassy said few customers are doing much shopping that way yet. Fortune quoted him calling the outside agent experience still not great, nor more convenient than coming to a retailer directly. Amazon blocked Meta's Muse assistant from its store about a month before the call, saying in September that Muse's access would violate its customer terms of use.

Jassy said Amazon expects to work with horizontal agents over time, but the message to brands is clear: the AI layer that matters most for Amazon sales is Amazon's own.

How this ties to Amazon's Q3 ad slowdown

Amazon's ad revenue grew 11% to $19.6 billion in Q3, down from 26% in Q2, and Jassy said outside agents were not the cause. On the call Amazon pointed to timing: Prime Day moved into Q2 in most large countries, and Q2 also carried NBA games on Prime Video that Q3 did not. Amazon guided Q4 ad growth back to the high teens. What sellers should do

If hundreds of millions of shoppers ask Alexa for Shopping before they scroll results, your listing has to answer the question the assistant is asked. Use this checklist before Black Friday on November 27.

  • Pull the top 20 customer questions from reviews, Q&A and returns, and answer each one plainly in bullets or A+ content
  • State use cases, sizes, compatibility and who the product is for in words, not only in images
  • Fix review themes the assistant may summarise against you, such as sizing or durability complaints
  • Keep price competitive across the year, since shoppers can see 12 months of price history
  • Add Subscribe and Save on repeat purchase items now that shoppers can manage it inside the assistant
  • Keep sponsored ads funded on your core terms, because ads still sit around the AI answers
