Newell Brands Q3 2026 in numbers
The numbers
Core sales rose 3.3%, and Newell raised its full year net sales outlook to 2% to 3% growth. Normalized EPS was $0.20, up from $0.17, but the company posted an $81 million net loss, driven mainly by a $101 million non-cash tradename impairment. Reports showed shares falling before the open as investors weighed the outlook, though later moves varied by outlet.
- Home and Commercial Solutions: $1,012 million, core sales up 6.0%
- Learning and Development: $692 million, core sales up 2.3%
- Outdoor and Recreation: $169 million, core sales down 6.4%
- Q4 guidance: net sales up 1% to 3%, normalized EPS $0.17 to $0.19
The signal: the cheap option is getting less cheap
Peterson said "pricing was effectively close to 0" in the quarter, so the growth came from volume and mix. He also said private label prices are moving up in categories where Newell competes, and that some competitors are already raising prices. Newell's plan is "modest pricing early in 2027", applied selectively by business and geography, below the level of two years of inflation.
That is the useful part for any brand selling housewares, candles, baby gear, writing or food storage. When a household name and the store brands both move, a small price rise of your own is less likely to cost you share. Peterson also said Newell is watching when competitors move, and that its 2026 pricing touched under 10% of its portfolio.

The number the headline misses: one refund, a quarter of the year
Erceg said about $100 million, or $0.17 per share, of 2026 normalized earnings comes from a one-time recovery of IEEPA tariffs paid in 2025. Against guidance of $0.74 to $0.76, that is about 23% of the year's EPS. Peterson said 2027 normalized operating margin should be down against the 2026 reported level, partly because that refund will not repeat.
If you booked a tariff refund this year, the same trap applies. Your 2026 margin is flattered, and a 2027 budget built on it starts too high. Our Church & Dwight Q3 report shows a similar refund effect.

So what: the math on your gap and your stock
Example with illustrative numbers: your product sells at $24.99 and the private label at $19.99, a 20% gap. If the store brand rises 5% to $20.99, the gap drops to 16%. You can raise 3% to $25.74, adding $0.75 a unit, and still sit at about 18%, tighter than before. On 2,000 units a month, that is $1,500 a month before any loss of volume.
Newell's inventory rose to $1.6 billion from $1.2 billion at the end of 2025. Erceg tied that to expected sales growth and to getting ahead of "the next shoe that might drop on the 301 tariffs". Example with illustrative numbers: buying $100,000 of stock four months early at an 8% cost of money costs about $2,667, while a 10 point tariff on that stock would cost $10,000. Buying early pays only if the tariff is likely, and if storage fees do not eat the saving. Peterson also said baby gear sits on a $30 billion list of goods where tariffs may be cut, so early buying can backfire.
What sellers should do this week
Use your Amazon pricing strategy to test one price at a time, and confirm the margin in our Amazon profit calculator.
- Category manager: list your top 20 ASINs and record the price gap to the top store brand each week. Metric: gap percent by ASIN.
- Founder: run a 3% price test on two or three ASINs where the gap has widened in your favor. Check in Business Reports. Metric: unit session percentage and profit per session.
- Finance lead: rebuild the 2026 margin without any tariff refund and use that as your 2027 base. Metric: gross margin excluding one-offs.
- PPC manager: recalculate break-even ACoS after any price change in the ad console, and adjust targets. Metric: ACoS against break-even.
- Ops lead: compare early-buy carrying cost with the tariff at risk, and check your FBA restock limits before ordering. Metric: landed cost per unit.
- Marketing lead: use Newell's advertising and promotion rate of about 6.9% of sales as one rough reference, not a target. Metric: total ad spend as a percent of sales.
When this does not apply
Newell's call says little about online sales, and neither the release nor the transcript mentions Amazon, so read this as a category pricing signal and not as marketplace data. If your category has no strong private label, or you compete with China-based sellers on Amazon, your rival's price may not follow. Peterson also expects holiday spending to rise but not a blowout, so a price test before December may be noisy; a January test can be cleaner.
