What the SmartScout data shows

SmartScout, an Amazon analytics firm, looked at the US marketplace for the twelve months leading up to August 2026. It counted 773 brands and 2,191 products in the creatine subcategory, earning about $57.5 million a month and $721 million over the trailing twelve months. Revenue still grew 4% month over month through the usual summer dip.

The article frames this as creatine's biggest year in three decades, since the supplement has been sold since the early 1990s. That framing is SmartScout's, but the growth numbers behind it come from its Amazon sales estimates, not from survey data.

  • Subcategory growth: 90% in 12 months
  • Trailing 12 month revenue: $721 million
  • Brands: 773, products: 2,191
  • Third party sellers: 83.2% of revenue, Amazon retail: 16.8%

Women are the new creatine buyer

SmartScout's explanation is demographic, not seasonal: women are coming to creatine through strength training and longevity talk on podcasts and social feeds. Search data backs the shift. "Creatine" draws 620,729 monthly searches, up 118,544 over twelve months, and "creatine for women" draws 174,396, up 33,799 year over year.

Format is moving too. "Creatine gummies" now pulls 260,315 searches a month, up 41,401 in three months, and the top three gummy products hold only 17% of clicks combined. On "creatine monohydrate" the top product alone takes 34%, so the gummy space is far less locked up.

Why the review leader is losing

Optimum Nutrition held 10.3% share at about $5.5 million a month and a $42 average price, but lost 52,778 units in the month SmartScout measured. Thorne led with 12.8% share, $7.4 million a month and a $57 average price, gaining 1.3 points while putting only 2.1% of total category ad dollars behind it.

CREATE, a newer brand, holds 8.2% share at $4.7 million a month and a $52 price, adding $488,000 in monthly revenue. It averages 844 reviews per listing against 28,967 for the incumbent. SmartScout's read is that third party testing, clinical positioning and creator credibility now convert better than review volume, and that share gainers cluster at $52 to $57 while the value tier starts at $27.

The cost of getting in

Ads in this subcategory are not cheap. SmartScout estimates cost per click at $5.60 for "creatine", $4.55 for "creatine for women" and $6.66 for "creatine gummies", the highest in the category, against $1.15 for "creatine monohydrate". Supplements also carry extra listing rules on Amazon, covered in our guide to the Amazon dietary supplement policy, so budget for testing and compliance before launch.

What this means for sellers and brands

A category can double while its best known brand shrinks. Growth from a new buyer group rewards brands that speak to that buyer directly, with the right format and proof of quality, and it punishes brands that rely on legacy reviews and a generic listing.

What sellers should do

These steps follow from the data and apply to any fast growing subcategory:

  • Pull search term data for new demographic and format modifiers, as shown in our Amazon keyword research guide, and build ad groups around them
  • Put trust signals in the main image stack and A+ content: third party testing, certifications and clear dosing
  • Check competitor price bands and click share with Amazon competitor research before choosing a price tier
  • Set bids from margin after fees with a break even ACoS calculator, since $5 to $7 clicks can erase profit fast
  • Get a free Amazon audit to find ad waste before Q4 costs rise
  • Follow more category and brand stories on the ecommerce marketplace news channel

Win a fast growing subcategory

  • Target new buyer modifiers
  • Show third party testing
  • Test new formats like gummies
