What is a SAFE-T claim?

SAFE-T stands for Seller Assurance for E-commerce Transactions. It is a reimbursement request a seller files when Amazon refunded a buyer on a seller-fulfilled order and the seller believes the loss was not their fault. Amazon investigates, and if it agrees, it reimburses the seller for some or all of the refund.

SAFE-T applies to seller-fulfilled orders only. FBA orders are handled by Amazon, and losses on FBA inventory go through the FBA reimbursement process instead.

What qualifies for a SAFE-T claim

The key condition is that Amazon issued the refund, not you. Refunds you issued yourself are generally not eligible. Within that, trade coverage of the 2026 rules lists the common qualifying situations.

  • Buyer returned the item damaged or used
  • Buyer returned a different or materially changed item
  • Lost shipment on a label with valid tracking
  • Refund caused by buyer error
  • Replacements, as well as refunds

What does not qualify

Some cases are excluded no matter how strong the evidence is. Check these before you spend time on a claim.

  • Refunds the seller issued directly
  • FBA orders
  • Items not yet refunded
  • International returns
  • Returns you failed to refund within the processing window, except lost-in-transit and wrong delivery confirmation cases

The 2026 deadline changes

Two changes in early 2026 reshaped SAFE-T. From January 26, 2026, sellers have four calendar days, rather than two business days, to refund a return after it is delivered back to them. Weekends and holidays count. If the window passes, Amazon refunds the buyer automatically and the seller loses SAFE-T eligibility for that return, except in cases such as items lost in transit or incorrect delivery confirmation.

From February 16, 2026, the SAFE-T filing window for US seller-fulfilled orders dropped from 60 days to 30 days. For returns, the 30 days run from the return delivery scan at your warehouse or the refund date, whichever is later. For lost shipments, the clock starts at the last scan event. Claims already in progress on that date were not affected.

How to file an Amazon SAFE-T claim, step by step

The claim form sits in Seller Central, usually under the Performance menu, and can also be started from the order. Gather evidence first so you only file once.

  • Confirm Amazon issued the refund and the order is seller-fulfilled
  • Check you are inside the 30-day window
  • Collect tracking, delivery scans, refund date and photos
  • Open SAFE-T claims in Seller Central and select the order
  • Pick the claim reason and describe what happened in plain facts
  • Attach evidence and submit
  • Answer any investigator request within seven days

SAFE-T evidence pack

  • Outbound and return tracking
  • Return delivery date and refund date
  • Photos of returned item and label
  • Photos or serials of item as shipped
  • Buyer-Seller Messages
  • Guided Refund Workflow notes

Evidence that gets SAFE-T claims approved

Investigators decide on the record, so the record has to be complete. Photos are the most common gap. Take them at the moment the return is opened, with the return label and packing visible.

Amazon's Guided Refund Workflow, available to seller-fulfilled sellers from January 2026, lets you grade returned items, apply allowed restocking fees and upload photos while you process the refund. Using it builds the evidence trail at the same time.

  • Tracking and delivery scans for outbound and return
  • Refund date and return delivery date
  • Photos of the returned item, packaging and label
  • Photos or serial numbers of the item as shipped
  • Buyer-Seller Messages about the return

SAFE-T versus A-to-z claims

The two are easy to confuse. An A-to-z Guarantee claim is filed by the buyer against the seller. A SAFE-T claim is filed by the seller against a refund Amazon already gave the buyer. A single order can involve both: the buyer wins an A-to-z claim on a damaged return, and the seller then files SAFE-T with photos showing the item left in perfect condition.

Build a weekly SAFE-T routine

With a 30-day window, monthly reviews are too slow. Run a short weekly check of Amazon-issued refunds, flag anything with damage or a mismatch, and file while the evidence is fresh. Our guide to Amazon return reasons helps you spot patterns behind repeat claims, and the returnless refund guide covers the December 18, 2026 prepaid label rule that adds a seven-day deadline for seller-fulfilled returns.

PPC Spider's inventory and reimbursements service runs this review weekly for seller-fulfilled brands and monthly reconciliation for FBA, so claims are filed inside the window. A free Amazon audit shows what is still recoverable.
