What is an Amazon returnless refund?
A returnless refund, which Amazon calls a Returnless Resolution in Seller Central, refunds or replaces an order while the customer keeps the product. Amazon introduced the FBA program in 2024 to make returns easier for customers and to cut the processing cost of returns that are not worth shipping back.
For the customer it is simple: they request a return and are told no return is needed. For the seller it is a trade: you give up the unit, but you avoid return shipping, inspection and the chance of the unit coming back unsellable.
Returnless Resolutions for FBA sellers
FBA Returnless Resolutions are opt-in. Trade coverage of the launch described two ways to set it up: by criteria, using item value, product category or return reason, or by SKU, picking specific products. Hazmat items, recalled products, gift cards, heavy and bulky items and items with an average selling price above $75 are not eligible.
On November 20, 2025, Amazon added price-based eligibility, letting sellers set a maximum item price anywhere from $1 to $75 and enable the program product by product. Amazon said returnless refunds are limited to customers without a history of returns abuse.
- Opt-in, set by criteria or by SKU
- Maximum item price set between $1 and $75
- Excludes hazmat, recalled, gift card and heavy or bulky items
- Limited to customers without a history of returns abuse
Demand forecasts, restock plans, inbound strategy and monthly reimbursement claims, so ads never run into an empty warehouse and Amazon pays back what it owes.
Returnless refunds for seller-fulfilled orders
Sellers who ship their own orders must offer customers one of three things under Amazon's return policy: a US return address, a prepaid return label, or a full refund without requiring the item back. The third option is the returnless refund, and sellers can set rules for it in their return settings by price, category and return reason.
Rules work on per-item price, so you cannot set a threshold based on order total. Check the rule logic in your Seller Central return settings before relying on it for multi-unit orders.
The 2026 deadline changes for FBM returns
Several changes in 2026 tightened how quickly seller-fulfilled returns must be handled. From January 26, 2026, the window to refund a received return moved from two business days to four calendar days, and missing it lets Amazon refund the customer automatically.
PPC Land reported an Amazon email saying that from December 18, 2026, prepaid return labels become mandatory for US seller-fulfilled returns, excluding heavy and bulky items. Sellers get seven calendar days from a return request to upload a prepaid label in the Manage Returns workflow or issue a full refund without the item. If neither happens, a returnless refund may be issued automatically and charged to the seller.
- Jan 26, 2026: four calendar days to refund a received return
- Dec 18, 2026: prepaid labels required for US FBM returns
- Seven calendar days to upload a label or refund
- Miss it: automatic returnless refund charged to you

Does a returnless refund hurt your account or margin?
A returnless refund is still a refund, so the sale and its revenue are reversed. Because the customer keeps the item by design, there is no returned unit to inspect, resell or claim as lost later, so do not expect the reimbursement routes used for normal FBA returns to apply. Treat every returnless refund as a full loss of the unit cost.
Returnless refunds can also hide product problems. When an item never comes back, you lose the physical evidence, so read the return reason and customer comment on every returnless order. Our guide to Amazon return reasons shows how to turn those codes into listing fixes.
Which products should qualify?
The math is simple: offer a returnless refund when the cost of getting a unit back is higher than what that unit is worth after it returns. Low-price items, heavy items with costly return postage, and products that usually come back unsellable, such as opened consumables, are the usual candidates.
Keep higher-value items, products prone to abuse and anything you can refurbish or resell out of the program. Review the SKU list each quarter as prices and fees change, and check our FBA fees guide when you recalculate.
- Unit cost lower than return shipping plus handling
- Items that rarely return in sellable condition
- Low-price consumables and accessories
- Exclude high-value or easily abused products
How to set up returnless rules, step by step
Menu names change, so follow the labels in your own account. The general flow is the same for both programs.
- Pull unit cost, fees and return rate for each SKU
- Flag SKUs where a return costs more than the unit is worth
- FBA: open the FBA returns settings and set a price cap and SKUs
- FBM: open Return settings and create a returnless resolution rule
- Choose the price range, categories and return reasons that qualify
- Review returnless orders monthly and adjust the list
Use the returns dashboard to watch the effect
Since November 12, 2025, all sellers have access to a returns and inventory recovery dashboard in Seller Central that shows top return reasons, recommendations for lowering return rates and the recovered value of returned units. Check it before and after you change returnless settings so you can see whether the policy is saving money or hiding a product issue.
Where PPC Spider fits
PPC Spider's inventory and reimbursements service models the cost of each return per SKU, recommends which products belong in returnless programs and files claims on the returns that do come back damaged or never arrive. SpiderOS sets target ACoS from margin after fees, so heavy refund costs feed straight into ad bids. Start with a free Amazon audit to see your return cost by ASIN.
