What the numbers say

Circana's first half 2026 report, as covered by Retail Dive, shows US toy dollar sales up 17% year over year, units up 12% and average selling price up 4%. Adult-only households made up 55% of toy sales, and their toy spending grew 16% through June. Toy sales to adults 18 and older rose 25%, the biggest single contributor, and purchases for teens aged 12 to 17 rose 33%. Together, teens and adults produced almost 60% of the industry's dollar gains.

An earlier Circana release covering January through April shows where the money went. Games and puzzles grew 39%, led by Pokemon. Explorative and other toys grew 36%, led by MLB and NeeDoh. Building sets grew 20%, led by LEGO Botanicals and Formula 1, and sensory squishy toys posted triple digit growth in dollars and units. Circana also said women drove more than half of industry growth and that buyers are moving toward mid tier and premium price points, while entry level products are under pressure.

The big brands show the same split

Hasbro's third quarter release, filed with the SEC on October 20, 2026, reported revenue of $1.595 billion, up 15%. Its Wizards of the Coast and Digital Gaming segment grew 31% to $747.2 million, and Magic: The Gathering grew 34% to $616.1 million, its first quarter above $600 million. Consumer Products, which holds most of its traditional toys, grew 4% to $827.9 million, led by Marvel, KPop Demon Hunters and Transformers.

Hasbro also booked about $55 million of tariff refunds in the quarter, $48 million of it in Consumer Products, so part of that profit will not repeat. Mattel's second quarter, per Retail Dive, showed sales up 10% to $1.1 billion but a net loss of $18 million. The growth is real, but it is concentrated in hobby, fandom and collectible products that adults buy for themselves.

The angle most coverage misses: the toy shopper is now a gift buyer and a collector

Most toy listings and ad campaigns on Amazon are still written for a parent buying for a child. The data says more than half of toy dollars now come from homes with no children, and the fastest growth sits with teens and adults. A brand that only targets parent search terms is aiming at the slower half of the market. Circana also notes that TikTok Shop reached about 1% of total US retail sales, with toys, hobbies and collectibles its third largest category, driven by unboxing and limited edition hunting.

So what: the math for one toy brand

For example, using illustrative numbers: a brand sells a $30 building kit on Amazon and spends $10,000 a month on Sponsored Products, all on parent and kid keywords, at a 25% ACoS. If half of category demand now comes from adult buyers and the brand reaches almost none of them, a separate adult intent campaign at the same 25% ACoS would need to drive only $8,000 of sales from $2,000 of spend to pay back at the same efficiency. With a 40% margin after fees, that is $3,200 of gross profit less $2,000 of ad spend, or $1,200 a month of new contribution, before any lift in organic rank.

Price matters too. Circana says growth is shifting toward mid tier and premium bands. Discounting a $30 item to $22 for Black Friday may win clicks from bargain hunters but miss adult collectors, who are paying more.

What sellers should do

Start this week so changes index before Black Friday on November 27.

  • Brand manager: open Brand Analytics, Demographics in Seller Central and check the age and household split of your buyers. Metric: share of orders from buyers 25 and older and from households without children.
  • Listing manager: where it is true, add adult use cases such as desk display, stress relief, collector or gift for adults to titles, bullets and A+ content. Metric: unit session percentage on the updated ASINs after 14 days.
  • PPC manager: build a separate Sponsored Products campaign for adult intent terms, for example gifts for adults, adult building sets or fidget toys for adults, with its own budget. Metric: ACoS against break even ACoS for that campaign.
  • Pricing lead: test a premium bundle or limited edition variation instead of only cutting the entry price for deals. Metric: average order value and profit per unit during Cyber Week.
  • Operations lead: confirm FBA stock covers December demand, since toy demand peaks late and stockouts lose rank. Metric: weeks of cover on top ASINs through December 20.
  • Social lead: if your product suits unboxing or sensory content, test TikTok Shop affiliates for the holiday. Metric: TikTok Shop GMV and cost per order versus Amazon.

Toy sellers before Black Friday

  • Check buyer age in Brand Analytics
  • Add true adult use cases to listings
  • Split adult intent ad campaigns
  • Test premium bundles, not only discounts
  • Cover December FBA stock
  • Test TikTok Shop unboxing content

When this does not apply

Circana tracks retail sales across channels, not Amazon alone, so check your own Brand Analytics before changing strategy. Much of the growth comes from licensed properties such as Pokemon, Marvel and LEGO tie ins that small brands cannot copy. Infant and preschool products are still bought mainly by parents. Fads also reverse fast: Pop Mart's third quarter revenue fell by about 45% to 50% as the Labubu craze cooled. And toys are a safety category on Amazon, so check the new $1 million insurance rule before adding SKUs.
