  • US sellers still take 65.3% of top 10,000 sales and 93.2% of top 100 sales, helped by higher prices.

What the Marketplace Pulse data shows

Marketplace Pulse, the ecommerce research firm, tracks the largest third party sellers on Amazon.com by estimated sales. In its July 9, 2026 report, written by Ben Donovan, it found that Chinese sellers have gained 1,342 positions in the top 10,000 since July 2020, while US sellers lost 1,320. The Chinese share rose 3.8 points in the last twelve months alone.

This is a different measure from the global seller base. Marketplace Pulse reported in September 2025 that Chinese sellers had passed 50% of Amazon's global active sellers. The new report says the crossover in the top 10,000 came roughly two years before that.

  • Chinese share of the top 10,000: 42.5% in July 2020, 55.9% in July 2026
  • US share of the top 10,000: 53.7% in July 2020, 40.5% in July 2026
  • In the 5,001 to 10,000 band, US sellers are only 34%

Why US sellers still dominate the money

Headcount is not revenue. Inside the top 10,000, US sellers hold 65.3% of the group's sales against 28.6% for Chinese sellers, the inverse of their seat counts. In the top 100, US sellers are 81.4% of sellers and 93.2% of sales.

Price explains part of it. US sellers have a higher average selling price at every rank band, and in the top 100 it is $47.62 against $22.03 for Chinese sellers. Big American brands sell fewer, pricier units, while factory direct sellers win volume in the middle ranks.

Top spots are stickier, but the owners are changing

Marketplace Pulse found that 68.6% of today's top sellers held their position a year ago, slightly above the 67% it recorded in 2019, and 49.6% were in the top 10,000 three years ago, up from 41%. So rank is more durable than before. What changed is who holds it: half of today's top sellers registered before 2019, down from over 60% a year earlier, and 6.3% of positions belong to sellers registered within the last eighteen months.

The report's explanation is that veterans built rank through organic position and review history, which has given way to sponsored placement, and factory direct entrants on thinner margins can outspend them for it. It also points to manufacturing proximity, export subsidies and AI tools that closed the listing quality gap. The report does not publish data behind those reasons, so treat them as analysis rather than measured fact.

What this means for sellers and brands

If you sell in the middle of the rankings, assume the competitor beside you has a lower landed cost and is willing to bid harder. History and reviews no longer guarantee placement. Brands that hold the very top do it with higher price points, brand demand and margin that pays for ads, which is a playbook smaller brands can copy in their own niche.

What sellers should do

These steps follow from the data and do not depend on any Amazon policy change:

  • Set target ACoS from real margin after fees using a break even ACoS calculator, so you know how hard you can bid before a lower cost rival forces you into losses
  • Protect branded search: bid on your own brand terms and watch who conquests them, as covered in our Amazon advertising strategy guide
  • Compete on value, not only price: bundles, larger packs and better A+ content support a higher selling price like the top 100 enjoy
  • Keep stock steady, because a stockout hands rank to a rival who can buy it back with ads
  • Check where your margin leaks with a free Amazon audit before Q4 ad costs peak
  • Track the wider picture in our Amazon seller statistics and on the Amazon FBA news channel

Defend your rank

  • Bid from margin after fees
  • Protect branded search
  • Sell value, not just price
  • Never stock out
  • Audit ad waste before Q4
