The numbers
SmartScout ties the shift to GLP-1 drugs, which cut appetite and raise the need to protect muscle. Circana backs up the demand side: 8.5% of adults were on GLP-1 diets in its latest report, up from 4.8% a year earlier, and 65% of shoppers on the drugs want more protein. Numerator's early Prime Day read named Premier Protein Shakes the biggest seller of the June 2026 event, while average order size fell 10.65% to $47.66.
- Protein drinks: $50.2 million a month, up 42% in a year. Core Power and Premier Protein hold 55% of ready to drink
- Protein bars: subcategory flat, and 10 of the top 12 brands lost revenue month over month in August
- "Protein powder": 603,335 monthly searches, up 59,279 in a year
- "Protein shake" searches up about 57,000 in 12 months; "protein bar" down about 2,600
- "glp 1": just 27,725 monthly searches, down about 4,900
The contradiction: the hottest shelf may be the worst place to advertise
Most coverage stops at the growth rate. The more useful finding is what that growth costs. SmartScout lists Protein Drinks at $9.72 a click, against $0.70 for Cottage Cheese, and says cottage cheese and Greek yogurt each have nine advertisers while drawing about 300,000 monthly searches. Those two terms each gained roughly 100,000 searches in a single month.
Shoppers also do not search the way brands label. Falling "glp 1" searches, set against rising protein and fiber searches, suggest buyers shop by need and not by drug name. "Fiber supplement" reached 158,468 monthly searches, up 28,689 in the latest month. Putting GLP-1 in your title may buy less than the phrase a shopper really types.
Size is not the moat either. Chomps earned $3.46 million a month on 59 products, ahead of Jack Link's $3.30 million on 215. Legendary Foods gained 6.3 share points in one month with protein pastries, a format that looks nothing like a bar. We saw a similar pattern in our report on Amazon creatine sales, where review count did not protect the leader.

So what: the math on a $9.72 click
Example with illustrative numbers: a shake pack sells at $34.99. Take off $5.25 in referral fees, $9.00 in fulfilment and $11.00 in landed cost, and you keep $9.74 before ads. With a 10% conversion rate, 10 clicks at $9.72 cost $97.20 for one order. You lose $87.46 on that order.
The same product at a $0.70 click and 10% conversion costs $7.00 an order and keeps $2.74. To break even at $9.72, a $9.74 margin needs nearly every click to convert, which no listing does. So paid growth at that price only works on repeat revenue, such as Subscribe and Save, or on your own branded terms, where clicks are usually cheaper. Run yours in the Amazon profit calculator.
What sellers should do this week
These steps work for any food, drink or supplement brand near this demand.
- PPC manager: export 60 days of search terms in the Amazon Ads console and sort by spend. Metric: actual cost per click against margin per unit.
- PPC manager: split brand, category and competitor terms into separate campaigns, then cap category bids at your break even cost per click. Metric: ACoS against break even ACoS. Our Amazon PPC management guide covers the setup.
- Brand owner: use Brand Analytics to compare need based terms such as fiber, protein and muscle against GLP-1 terms. Metric: search volume and click share.
- Listing owner: add the real need to titles and bullets, using only claims you can support. Metric: unit session percentage.
- Finance: model subscriber repeat rate before raising bids on hot terms. Metric: 90 day revenue per new customer.
- Product lead: review formats near your line, as Legendary did with pastries. Metric: new to brand orders on the test ASIN.
When this does not apply
SmartScout gives no date for its cost per click figures, and they are category estimates, so your console numbers matter more. The $633 million and $50.2 million figures do not multiply cleanly, so the windows may differ, and SmartScout's protein bar annual figure comes from a wider parent category, so we left it out. Cottage cheese and Greek yogurt are refrigerated, so most small brands cannot simply list there; treat them as a sign of what shoppers want, not a shelf to enter. The GLP-1 link is SmartScout's reading and fits Circana's survey data, but the search figures alone do not prove cause. Supplement and health claims also carry compliance rules, so check them before changing copy.
Where PPC Spider fits
We set target ACoS from margin after fees, so a hot keyword gets a bid your product can pay for. A free Amazon audit or a PPC audit will show which terms lose money. More category data is on our marketplace news channel.
