What to do
Match LPNs to the FBA customer returns report before filing claims

Key takeaways

  • An LPN identifies one physical unit; an FNSKU identifies your offer; an ASIN identifies the product.
  • Look up LPNs in the FBA customer returns report to find the order and return reason.
  • Photograph units and keep LPN stickers until claims are settled.

What does LPN mean on Amazon?

LPN stands for license plate number. Amazon describes it as a unique serial number that identifies specific items throughout the fulfillment process. Where an ASIN identifies a product and an FNSKU identifies your offer of that product, an LPN identifies one individual unit.

You will usually meet an LPN as a sticker on a returned item, often placed over the original label, or as a column in a returns or removal report. That sticker is the bridge between the box on your desk and the record in Seller Central.

LPN versus FNSKU, ASIN and UPC

Sellers often mix these identifiers up. Each one works at a different level, and claims go faster when you quote the right one. See what an ASIN is for the product-level identifier.

  • UPC or EAN: the manufacturer barcode for a product
  • ASIN: Amazon's product identifier for a detail page
  • FNSKU: your seller-specific barcode for FBA units of that ASIN
  • LPN: one physical unit as it moves through returns and handling

Where do LPN numbers appear?

LPNs show up wherever Amazon needs to track a single unit rather than a product. For most sellers that means three places.

  • Customer returns: the LPN links the returned unit to the original order and return reason
  • Removal orders: units shipped back to you can carry LPN stickers
  • Reimbursement evidence: Amazon asks for LPNs on some removal claims

How to look up an Amazon LPN number, step by step

The main lookup tool is the FBA customer returns report. Menu names change from time to time, so search Reports in Seller Central if the path looks different.

  • Open Seller Central and go to Reports, then Fulfillment
  • Find the FBA customer returns report under customer concessions
  • Choose a date range that covers the return and download it
  • Search the license plate number column for the LPN on the sticker
  • Read the order ID, return reason, disposition and date
  • Compare the disposition with the item's actual condition

What to do when an LPN does not match

Sometimes the item in your hands does not match the record. The product might be a different item, an empty box or a unit graded sellable that is clearly damaged. Sellers also report that some LPNs return no results in the report. In each case, photograph the unit, the LPN sticker and the packaging before you do anything else.

If a customer returned the wrong item, or a sellable grade was clearly wrong, those photos and the LPN become your evidence for a claim. Our guide to the Amazon reimbursement claim process explains how to file.

Using LPNs in reimbursement claims

Amazon's reimbursement policy asks for detail on removal claims, including shipment and tracking information, ASINs or FNSKUs and quantities, LPNs and photos of the units, packaging and box. Grading disputes on removals also need a written explanation and have short time limits after delivery to your address.

Customer return claims work from the order ID, which the LPN helps you find. Because claim windows were shortened in late 2024, check returns weekly instead of saving them for a quarterly cleanup. The FBA reimbursement guide lists the claim types.

Good habits for handling LPN stickers

Small process changes save time when a dispute comes up later.

  • Do not remove LPN stickers until the unit is logged
  • Photograph every returned or removed unit on arrival
  • Log LPN, order ID, condition and decision in one sheet
  • Re-label with your FNSKU before sending sellable units back
  • Flag repeated return reasons to fix the listing

LPN handling habits

  • Keep stickers until logged
  • Photograph on arrival
  • Log LPN and order ID
  • Re-label sellable units
  • Flag repeat return reasons

Why LPNs matter more after the commingling change

Since March 31, 2026, Amazon no longer commingles new inbound inventory, and returns and removals come from your own units rather than a shared pool. That makes the LPN on a returned unit more meaningful: the item should be one you sent in, so a wrong or counterfeit item coming back is easier to dispute. Read the Amazon commingled inventory guide for the full change.

How LPN data improves your listings

Return reasons tied to LPNs tell you why customers send products back. If the same reason repeats, such as wrong size or not as described, the fix is usually in the listing: clearer images, a size chart or better bullets. Our guide to Amazon return reasons shows how to read them.

PPC Spider's FBA inventory and reimbursements service reviews returns and removals monthly and files claims with LPN evidence. The free Amazon audit includes a check of recent returns.
