What Wayfair reported

Wayfair's results for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, filed with the SEC on November 4, show net revenue of $3.42 billion, up $303 million or 9.7%. US revenue was $3.04 billion, up 11.4%, while international revenue fell 2.3% to $380 million. Wayfair swung to net income of $62 million from a $99 million loss a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA rose to $236 million, a 6.9% margin.

CNBC reported that adjusted earnings of 93 cents a share beat the 79 cents analysts expected, per LSEG, and revenue beat the $3.38 billion estimate. Investing.com reported the stock jumped about 10% in morning trading and touched a 52 week high of $126.81. Chief executive Niraj Shah called it the "strongest quarter of growth in the post-pandemic period".

The number most coverage missed: ad spend as a share of sales

Wayfair does not print an advertising percentage in its release, but the income statement does the work. Advertising was $338 million against $330 million a year earlier, up 2.4%, while revenue grew 9.7%. That puts ad spend at 9.9% of revenue, down from 10.6%. On $3.42 billion of revenue, 0.7 points is roughly $24 million a quarter that did not have to be spent to reach the same sales.

The gain flowed down the page. Contribution profit rose to 16.1% of revenue from 15.8%, operating income rose to $106 million from $38 million, and free cash flow was $136 million versus $93 million.

Where the growth came from

Orders delivered rose 12.2% to 11.0 million, faster than revenue, because average order value slipped to $311 from $317. Active customers grew 4.7% to 22.2 million and orders per customer rose to 1.90 from 1.87. Repeat customers placed 80.0% of orders. CFO Kate Gulliver told CNBC the category is "roughly flattish" and that promotions this year are consistent with last year, crediting loyalty, new stores and its luxury business for the share gains.

In plain terms: Wayfair did not buy this growth with deeper discounts or a bigger ad budget. It sold more, smaller orders to more returning customers, and paid less in advertising per dollar of sales.

So what for brands

Home and furniture brands that sell on Wayfair, Amazon and their own sites should read this two ways. First, a flat category does not mean a flat brand: Wayfair took share from rivals in a market that did not grow. Second, the cheapest growth came from customers who already knew the store. For a brand, that points to repeat purchase, bundles and accessories, not only new customer ads.

For example, with illustrative numbers: a home brand sells $500,000 a month across channels and spends 10.6% of sales on ads, or $53,000. If it grows sales 10% to $550,000 while holding ad spend near flat at $54,450, its ad share falls to 9.9%. At a 40% contribution margin before ads, profit after ads rises from $147,000 to $165,550, about $18,500 more a month, with almost no extra ad money. That is the Wayfair pattern at brand scale.

What sellers should do

These steps fit home, furniture and decor brands heading into Black Friday on November 27, 2026.

  • Finance lead: calculate ad spend as a share of total sales, not only ACoS, for each channel monthly. Metric: total ad spend divided by total revenue, trending down while revenue rises. Our guide to Amazon advertising cost shows the benchmarks.
  • Amazon ads manager: move budget from broad new customer campaigns to brand defense and remarketing on past buyers during peak weeks. Metric: share of ad sales from branded and returning customer audiences.
  • Ecommerce lead: build accessory and bundle offers that raise orders per customer, even if order value dips, as Wayfair's did. Metric: orders per customer over 12 months.
  • Marketplace manager on Wayfair: keep promotions in line with last year rather than deeper, since Wayfair itself is holding its promotional level. Metric: gross margin per order during the holiday window.
  • Brand owner: get a second opinion on wasted spend with a free Amazon audit before the holiday budget is locked. Metric: wasted spend on search terms with clicks and no orders.

Copy the Wayfair pattern

  • Track ad spend over total sales monthly
  • Shift peak budget to past buyers
  • Add bundles that lift orders per customer
  • Hold promotions at last year's depth
  • Cut search terms with clicks and no orders

When this does not apply

Wayfair has 22.2 million active customers and a habit loop most brands lack. A new brand with few repeat buyers needs new customer ads to grow, and cutting ad share too fast can stall it. The ad ratio also improved partly because revenue rose; in a falling quarter the same spend would push the ratio up. And Wayfair's international unit lost money, so its results do not prove the model works in every market.
