Key takeaways

  • From January 11, 2027, most single-ASIN bundles must be packed by the original manufacturer or brand.
  • Exceptions: brand letters of authorization, gifting browse nodes, camera product types and virtual bundles.
  • Noncompliant stock can sell until January 11; after that, listings are deactivated and logged as violations.

How the Amazon bundle policy change rolls out

  1. Amazon posts the notice in Seller Forums news

  2. Noncompliant bundle stock can still sell

  3. Most single-ASIN bundles must be factory or brand packed

  4. Flagged bundles deactivated, violations on Account Health

What Amazon changed

Amazon's notice, titled "New requirements for product bundles starting January 11", sets one main rule: a bundle sold as one ASIN must come packed that way by the maker or the brand. If you buy a shampoo from one brand and a conditioner from another and shrink wrap them together, that kit fails the new test. Seller Essentials points out it also catches kits built at a prep center or by a supplier who is not the brand owner.

The consequence is spelled out. Noncompliant bundles will be deactivated and become listing violations on the Account Health dashboard, and Amazon says it will email affected sellers. Our Amazon product bundles guide covers the general bundle rules that still apply on top of this one.

The three ways a bundle stays live

Amazon lists three exceptions. Read them closely, because most bundle sellers will need one of them.

  • Brand permission: a letter of authorization from the brand owner or manufacturer granting permission to repackage with all the other included brands. Amazon describes uploading it through Account Health after a bundle is flagged, and Seller Squash says it could not verify any way to clear a bundle in advance.
  • Exempt product types: bundles listed in gifting browse nodes and camera product types do not need to be original manufacturer configurations.
  • Virtual bundles: kits built with Amazon's Virtual Bundles tool are not packed together, so they are outside the packaging rule. Amazon says the tool is for brand owners and authorized resellers. See our Amazon virtual bundles guide for setup.

What Amazon loosened at the same time

The notice is not only a tightening. Amazon says sellers can now create bundles in Books, Music, Video, DVD and Video Game categories, and can include secondary generic products, service plans and gift cards. Multi-brand Consumables bundles are allowed with letters of authorization. Amazon Sellers Appeal and Seller Essentials read the packaging rule as still applying to these new bundle types, while DAM Law Firm describes them only as subject to standard bundling rules. Until Amazon clarifies, assume the packaging rule applies.

Where the experts disagree

Amazon's post leaves gaps, and the specialist write-ups split on three of them. Treat these as open questions to put to Seller Support, not settled rules.

  • Your own brand: DAM Law Firm says a bundle of your own brand's products needs no authorization; Seller Essentials says a private label seller should still write its own letter; Amazon Sellers Appeal says same brand alone does not save a hard kit.
  • Multi-packs: Amazon Sellers Appeal says six identical units is a multi-pack, not a bundle; FBMFulfillment calls single-SKU packs a grey zone.
  • Timing: Amazon says flagged after January 11, while DAM Law Firm writes starting January 11. Plan for day one.

What this means for sellers and brands

This hits resellers and kit builders hardest, but brands are exposed too if a distributor or reseller lists kits of their products. For a reseller, every noncompliant bundle becomes its own listing violation, so a catalog of 15 kits can mean 15 separate entries on Account Health, and accumulated violations can drag down the Amazon account health rating.

The money risk is stranded stock. Amazon says you can keep selling noncompliant inventory before January 11, but whatever is left in a fulfillment center after that needs a removal order. Worked example, illustrative numbers: a kit sells 50 units a month and you have 300 units at FBA. Between now and January 11 is about 2.2 months, so you sell about 110 units and roughly 190 are left to remove, break apart, liquidate or relist. At $8 of contribution per unit, that is about $1,520 of profit you only keep if you act early, before counting removal fees.

  • Bundles you assemble from other brands are the main exposure.
  • Brands can win back control of their own kits as resellers drop out.

What sellers should do

Start this week, because Q4 sales and Amazon's holiday inbound cutoffs leave little room in December.

  • Catalog owner: export every bundle ASIN and tag it as factory packed, seller assembled, gift node, camera or virtual. Metric: count of seller-assembled ASINs with no exception.
  • Brand or sourcing lead: request letters of authorization from every brand in each kit, worded to permit repackaging with the other brands. Metric: share of exposed ASINs with a signed letter on file.
  • Inventory planner: compare weeks of cover with the weeks left until January 11 and stop reordering components for exposed kits. Metric: units projected to remain on January 11.
  • Ads manager: shift Sponsored Products budget toward exposed kits with excess stock to sell them through before the deadline, then pause. Metric: units left and ACoS against breakeven.
  • Brand owners: rebuild key kits as virtual bundles in Brand Registry so the offer survives. Metric: virtual bundle live before January 11.
  • Operations: create removal orders for leftover FBA stock while the listing is still live, then watch Account Health for flags. Metric: zero new bundle listing violations.

Before January 11

  • Tag every bundle ASIN by type
  • Request brand letters for exposed kits
  • Stop reordering exposed components
  • Push ad spend to sell through excess
  • Rebuild key kits as virtual bundles
  • Create removal orders while listings are live

When this does not apply

If you only sell single units, factory-packed multi-packs or kits the manufacturer ships as one boxed product, nothing changes for you. Virtual bundles, gift basket listings in gifting browse nodes and camera product types are exempt. The notice also does not name a marketplace, and most coverage reads it as the US store, so sellers in other Amazon stores should check their own Seller Central news.
