Key takeaways
- In Ahrefs' 75,000 brand study, YouTube and web brand mentions correlated more with AI visibility than backlinks.
- Correlation is not proof; popular brands get both more mentions and more AI answers.
- Track AI answers for your buyer questions monthly and earn mentions on the sources behind them.

Why brand mentions in AI search matter
When a shopper asks an AI assistant for the best running shoes for flat feet or a non toxic cookware brand, the answer usually names a few brands and skips the rest. There is no page two. If your brand is not in that short list, you are not in the consideration set for that shopper.
AI answers are now part of shopping on Amazon too. On May 13, 2026, Amazon renamed its Rufus assistant Alexa for Shopping, and it now answers questions in the main search bar and inside visual search. Brands that are clearly described across the web and in their own listings are easier for these systems to recommend.
What the research says about brand mentions
Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands and millions of AI responses and published the results on December 12, 2025. YouTube mentions showed the strongest correlation with AI visibility, at about 0.737, across ChatGPT, AI Mode and AI Overviews. Branded web mentions came next, with correlations between about 0.66 and 0.71 depending on the platform.
Classic SEO authority signals were weaker. For ChatGPT, branded search volume correlated at 0.352 and Domain Rating at 0.266, and the number of pages on a site showed almost no relationship with AI visibility. In AI Mode, branded web mentions reached 0.709.
- YouTube mentions: about 0.737, strongest factor across platforms
- Branded web mentions: about 0.66 to 0.71
- Branded anchor text: about 0.51 to 0.63
- Domain Rating: about 0.27 to 0.33
- Number of site pages: about 0.19, almost no relationship
Listings structured for Amazon Rufus, brand content that AI Overviews and ChatGPT can cite, and monthly tracking of what the answer engines say about you.
What the research does not prove
These are correlations, not proof that one more mention will make an AI name your brand. Big, well known brands get more mentions and more AI visibility for the same underlying reason: they are popular. The study also only included brands with a Domain Rating above 40 and a top keyword with at least 800 monthly searches, so results may differ for small brands.
The practical reading is still useful. AI systems learn what a brand is and when to recommend it from how other people describe it, not only from what the brand says about itself.
Where AI assistants find brand information
Each assistant uses a different mix of sources, and none publish a full list. In practice, answers draw on a combination of training data, live web search results, video platforms, forums and retailer catalogs. For ecommerce brands, these are the places worth covering.
- Editorial reviews and best of lists from trusted publishers
- YouTube reviews, tutorials and comparisons
- Reddit and niche forums where buyers discuss products
- Your own website, product pages and structured data
- Amazon listings, reviews and Q and A, which feed Alexa for Shopping
- Podcasts, news coverage and industry directories
Where to earn mentions
| Why it counts | First move | |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube | Strongest correlation | Send samples to reviewers |
| Editorial sites | Trusted best of lists | Pitch data and products |
| Forums | Real buyer language | Answer questions honestly |
| Amazon | Feeds Alexa for Shopping | Complete every attribute |
How to earn more brand mentions, step by step
Treat AI visibility like digital PR with a measurement plan. Start with the questions your buyers ask, then work on being named where those answers come from.
- List 20 to 50 buyer questions for your category, such as best, versus and for use cases
- Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and Alexa for Shopping each question and record which brands appear
- Note which sources the answers cite or resemble
- Pitch product samples and data to the publishers and creators behind those sources
- Publish clear comparison and use case pages on your own site
- Support YouTube reviews and tutorials from relevant creators
- Repeat the question set monthly and track your share of answers
Monthly AI visibility routine
- Run the same buyer question set
- Record brands named per assistant
- Note cited or likely sources
- Pitch one new publisher or creator
- Update comparison pages on your site
- Check Amazon listings answer top questions
Make your brand easy for AI to describe
Mentions work best when they are consistent. Use the same brand name, product names and one line description everywhere: your website, Amazon listings, social profiles and press kit. Add Organization and Product structured data to your site, following our guide to ecommerce SEO best practices, so search engines can connect your pages to your brand.
On Amazon, clear titles, accurate attributes, complete images and honest answers to common questions help Alexa for Shopping match your products to questions. Our guides to AI tools for Amazon sellers and image search on Amazon cover the Amazon side.
Mistakes to avoid
Buying mentions on low quality sites, publishing AI written articles at scale, or seeding fake reviews will not build trust and can damage the brand. Paid placements should be disclosed. Focus on mentions that a real buyer would find useful, because those are the ones that last and get repeated.
