What the Marketplace Pulse data shows

Marketplace Pulse, the e-commerce research firm, estimated lifetime GMV for nearly 100,000 US TikTok Shop sellers from units sold and average price. The picture is lopsided. The top 1%, fewer than 900 shops, account for 60% of all tracked US GMV. The top 0.1%, fewer than 90 shops, average more than $100 million in lifetime sales each and take more than a quarter of GMV on their own. The bottom half of sellers add up to roughly 0.1%, and the middle of the distribution is thin.

The firm notes that coverage of the largest sellers is comprehensive while the long tail is still being filled in, so the smallest shares may move. The figures show who has captured demand to date, not current run rate.

More concentrated than Amazon

On Amazon, fewer than 8,000 sellers, about 1.6% of the active base, generate half of third party GMV, according to the same analysis. TikTok Shop's top 1% clears that 50% mark with room to spare. The filter is different too: on Amazon it is operations and capital, on TikTok Shop it is virality. Marketplace Pulse's conclusion is that democratized discovery has so far produced a smaller winners' circle, not a wider one.

Badges multiply the gap

TikTok Shop awards Official Store and Gold Star badges. Official Store sellers move roughly 40 times the volume of unbadged sellers, at a higher average price, and Gold Star sellers move close to 18 times as much. Marketplace Pulse says badges are partly a result of scale rather than the cause, but the effect compounds, because badged shops look safer to shoppers and to affiliate creators.

The October report adds what sells and how fast it turns over

Marketplace Pulse's TikTok Shop Trends Report, published October 9, 2026, widened the dataset to more than 150,000 US sellers and over 4.5 million products. More than two thirds of revenue among top selling products comes from items applied to the body, taken into it or worn on it, and beauty alone is close to 30%. The median top product sells for around $40. The firm also found that the TikTok Shop leaderboard turns over faster than on any marketplace it tracks, so a top spot is easier to win and easier to lose.

What this means for sellers and brands

TikTok Shop is not a level field where one viral video is enough. It behaves like a winner-take-most channel where scale, badges, creator reach and content output feed each other. For a small brand that is both a warning and an opening: the median shop earns almost nothing, but fast turnover at the top means a brand with the right product, price point and content engine can climb quickly. Brands outside body, beauty and wearable categories should set lower expectations or treat TikTok as a discovery channel feeding Amazon and their own site.

  • Most shops earn very little: the bottom half shares about 0.1% of tracked GMV.
  • Badges and Shop Performance Score are growth levers, not paperwork.

What sellers should do

Treat the data as a plan for where to spend, not a reason to quit. Start by protecting the score that unlocks campaigns and affiliates, which we covered in our TikTok Shop Performance Score update, and follow our TikTok Shop account health guide to stay clear of penalties.

  • Check badge eligibility in Seller Center and close the gaps that block Gold Star or Official Store status.
  • Build a steady content and creator pipeline instead of one launch push; see our guide to TikTok Shop affiliate marketing.
  • Price test around the $40 band if your category allows it, and watch margin after fees and creator commission.
  • Track 30 day sales against lifetime sales so you see rank decay early.
  • Keep Amazon and your own store as the profit base while TikTok drives discovery.

Seller checklist for a winner-take-most channel

  • Hold Shop Performance Score at 3.5 or higher
  • Close gaps for Gold Star or Official Store
  • Run a steady creator and content pipeline
  • Test prices near the $40 median
  • Track 30 day vs lifetime sales
  • Keep Amazon as the profit base
