Shopify Q3 2026 growth by line, year on year
What Shopify reported on November 3
Shopify said third quarter revenue reached $3,742 million, against $2,844 million a year earlier, a 32% rise in both reported and constant currency terms. Net income was $462 million, up from $264 million. Gross margin was 47.6%, unchanged from the second quarter, and the free cash flow margin was about 22%. Operating expenses fell to 32% of revenue from 37% a year ago, which lifted the operating margin to 15.2% from 12.1%, according to StockStory's breakdown on Yahoo Finance.
Gross merchandise volume, the value of everything merchants sold, was $119.1 billion, up 29.5% (30% in constant currency) per the earnings call. North America grew 28%, Europe 33% in constant currency, and international GMV 32%. Offline point of sale GMV rose 30%, and Shop Pay GMV grew more than 50%.
Why the stock fell anyway
Revenue of $3.74 billion was roughly in line with the $3.75 billion analysts expected, and GMV slightly missed expectations. Shares fell 15.1% to $132.50 right after the release, per StockStory, while Investing.com recorded a 6.65% premarket drop to $145.83 from a $156.22 close, so the size of the fall depended on the hour. Adjusted earnings of $0.49 a share beat the $0.47 estimate. For investors priced for a beat on every line, in line was not enough. For brands, the operating numbers matter more than the share price, and they show a platform still growing at almost three times the pace of US ecommerce.

The numbers most coverage skipped: AI orders and B2B
President Harley Finkelstein told analysts that traffic from AI tools grew 2.6 times year over year and orders from AI tools grew 3.3 times, while noting the volume is still small. Searches powered by Shopify's product catalog convert at twice the rate of general AI search. Q3 was the first quarter in which shoppers experimented with delegated purchasing, where a personal agent completes the order. Management named ChatGPT, Google Gemini and Claude among the connected channels, and CFO Jeff Hoffmeister said agent-referred sales carry the same economics for Shopify as other discovery channels.
B2B GMV grew 74%, the fastest line in the quarter. That matters to any brand still taking wholesale orders by email or spreadsheet, because it shows how many brands moved those buyers onto self-serve ordering this year.

So what for a brand's P&L
Shopify said its US merchants grew online sales at a 23% compound annual rate over three years, against 8% for US ecommerce overall, and now capture nearly half of incremental US ecommerce sales. If your store grew 10% this year, the platform average says you are losing share to other Shopify brands, not just to Amazon. Note that GMV is in dollars, so part of the 29.5% reflects higher prices, the same effect we showed in our coverage of the record 17.1% ecommerce share. The plain math: compare your unit growth, not just revenue, with the platform rate.
Guidance points to more of the same. Shopify expects fourth quarter revenue to grow at a low thirties percentage rate, gross profit at a high twenties rate, operating expenses at 29% to 30% of revenue, and a free cash flow margin in line with Q4 2025.
Worked example with illustrative numbers
These numbers are invented to show the arithmetic. A brand sells $2,000,000 a year on Amazon and $400,000 on its Shopify store. The store grew 12% last year, to $400,000 from about $357,000. Had it matched Shopify's 29.5% GMV growth, it would be at about $462,000, so the gap is roughly $62,000 a year. If AI referrals today bring 0.5% of orders and grow 3.3 times, they reach about 1.65% next year, or around $7,600 on a $462,000 store. That is small, which is the point: the cost of fixing product data for AI channels is mostly one-off, and the channel compounds.
What sellers should do before Black Friday
- DTC lead: in Shopify Analytics, compare year on year sales and units for Q3 with Shopify's 29.5% GMV growth. Metric: unit growth written next to revenue growth in the monthly report.
- Ecommerce manager: in the referrer report, tag sessions and orders from chatgpt.com, gemini.google.com, perplexity.ai and claude.ai as one AI channel. Metric: AI orders per week, tracked from now to January.
- Catalog owner: fill GTIN, variant, material, size and use case fields for your top 50 products, since catalog-powered AI search converts at twice the rate. Read our note on Shopify's agentic checkout tools. Metric: share of top products with every attribute complete.
- Checkout owner: confirm Shop Pay is on and appears first on mobile, given Shop Pay GMV grew more than 50%. Metric: mobile checkout conversion week over week.
- Wholesale lead: if you take more than a handful of reorders a month by email, test a B2B price list and self-serve ordering. Metric: share of wholesale reorders placed online.
- Amazon manager: decide which channel owns new customers this holiday using our Shopify vs Amazon FBA comparison, and keep inventory in sync across both. Metric: stockouts on either channel during Black Friday week.
When this does not apply
Shopify's figures are platform totals, weighted toward its largest merchants and boosted by price increases, so a small or niche store can move very differently. Brands that use Shopify only as a landing page for Amazon traffic should judge success on Amazon metrics instead. AI orders are growing fast from a small base; do not move ad budget into them yet, fix data first. And the B2B result is irrelevant to brands with no wholesale buyers.
