Google's road to checkout in AI Mode
Google launches UCP with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target, Walmart
Cart, catalog and identity linking added
US checkout open to selected merchants
Checkout reaches Canada in AI Mode and Gemini
Simplified Merchant Center setup for more retailers
What Google launched on November 4
Google Canada said direct checkout, powered by the Universal Commerce Protocol, is rolling out to Canadian shoppers in AI Mode in Google Search and in the Gemini app. A shopper who asks for, say, a waterproof jacket can see eligible products and buy inside Google using the cards and shipping details saved in Google Wallet. The first retailers are lululemon, Shoppers Drug Mart, Simons and select Shopify merchants. Google says the retailers remain the seller of record, so they keep the customer, the order and the returns.
Shopify told Search Engine Journal that merchants selling into Canada can be bought from with zero extra work, though Google's own wording limits the first wave to select Shopify merchants. Google said loyalty rewards will be added in the coming months. Neither company mentioned any fee for orders placed this way.
The bigger news: a Merchant Center switch next year
Until now, getting this checkout has required building to the protocol and being picked. Google's Merchant Center help pages say checkout enabled by UCP is available to selected merchants, that only listings marked with the native_commerce checkout attribute show the buy button, and that merchants need a Google Pay and Wallet Console account. The onboarding page says the Merchant Center integration is gradually rolling out in the US, with Australia and Canada following next year.
Google's November 4 post confirms the direction: starting next year it will broaden access by making a simplified UCP integration available directly within Merchant Center. Google has not given a date. Search Engine Journal also points out that Google has not explained how these orders will show up in Merchant Center and Google Ads reporting, which matters for anyone paying for Shopping clicks.

How we got here in 2026
Google launched UCP at the NRF show on January 11, 2026 as an open standard for AI agents to buy from stores, co-developed with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart and endorsed by firms including Best Buy, The Home Depot, Macy's, Stripe, Visa and Mastercard. On March 19 it added optional cart, catalog and identity linking features, the last letting shoppers connect a store account. Canada is the first expansion we have seen of the buying step outside the US. Shopify's own version of this push is covered in our post on Shopify Shop MCP and agentic checkout.
So what: fewer steps between a question and an order
Today a Shopping click sends the shopper to your product page, where some of them leave. Checkout inside AI Mode removes that step, which can lift conversion but also means fewer visits, fewer email signups and less chance to upsell on your site. Here is an illustrative example, with invented numbers. A Canadian store with a CA$80 average order gets 10,000 clicks a month from Google, and 2.5% of visitors buy, or 250 orders worth CA$20,000.
If in-Google checkout lifted conversion on the eligible share of that traffic, say 3,000 clicks, from 2.5% to 3.5%, that is 30 extra orders, about CA$2,400 a month. Against that, the store loses those 3,000 visits for retargeting and list building, so the gain is real only if the extra orders are worth more than the follow-up sales those visitors would have brought. Measure both before you call it a win.
Get ready for AI Mode checkout
- Prices match feed and site
- Stock synced daily
- Shipping and returns set in Merchant Center
- Google Pay and Wallet Console account
- UCP interest form filed (US)
- Post-purchase email plan
What sellers and brands should do
- Ecommerce manager: audit your Merchant Center feed for accurate price, stock, shipping and returns data, because AI Mode answers lean on it and checkout will too. Metric: zero disapproved products and no price mismatch warnings.
- Shopify store owner selling into Canada: check the Shopify admin and Google channel app for any new checkout setting and note when orders start arriving from Google. Metric: orders tagged with the Google sales channel.
- US merchant on a custom platform: read the UCP developer guide and submit Google's UCP integration interest form so you are in line when selection widens. Metric: application submitted and a technical owner assigned.
- Marketing lead: plan how to capture customers who never visit your site, such as post-purchase emails and packaging inserts, since you remain seller of record. Metric: repeat purchase rate of Google-checkout buyers versus site buyers.
- Ads lead: track Shopping conversion rate and cost per order before and after checkout goes live, with help from a Google Shopping ads agency if reporting gets murky. Metric: cost per order and blended return on ad spend.
When this does not apply
If you sell only on Amazon, nothing changes yet; your listings do not use Merchant Center, and Amazon has kept outside AI shopping agents at arm's length. Start with a free Amazon audit instead. If you sell high-consideration or custom products that need sizing help, quotes or bundles, an in-chat buy button may convert less well than your own site. And outside the US, Canada and Australia, Google has not announced a date.
